Video from Spain Passed off as Modi’s Victory Celebrations in USA

A viral video claims that people in USA celebrated Modi’s win. However, the video is actually from Spain.

CLAIM

A viral video on social media claims that people in USA celebrated Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s win in the recently concluded Lok Sabha election.

A Facebook user shared the video with a similar claim and received an engagement of over 1,000 views and 120 shares at the time this article was written.

The Quint received a query about the claims on the same video via its WhatsApp helpline as well.

TRUE OR FALSE?

The claim around the video is false. This video is not from USA and certainly not celebrating Narendra Modi’s win. This video is actually from 2018 Spain tour of Swargandhar, a Mumbai-based Puneri Dhol Tasha group.

WHAT WE FOUND OUT

We did a frame-to-frame analysis using InVID, a video verification tool, and then reverse-searched each frame on Yandex. This led us to a post that was titled as ‘Dhol Tasha on the streets of Spain (2)- Swargandhar Dhol Tasha Pathak’

Yandex led us to a posted that mentioned the Swargandhar Dhol Tasha group.

Then, we searched on YouTube using the keywords ‘Swargandhar,’ ‘Dhol,’ ‘Tasha,’ ‘Pathak’ and ‘Spain.’ It led us to a video published by Swargandhar Dhol Tasha group.

A YouTube search led us to a video posted by the Swargandhar group.

The Swargandhar group had actually gone to Spain for an International Folk Festival held in June 2018. Prasad Pimpale, founder of Swargandhar Dhol Tasha group, told The Quint that the viral video is from their Spain tour.

“We had three performances lined up in the festival – one on stage and two street performances. This video is from our street performance. We weren’t sent by the government, so we weren’t representing India per se. We had applied to take part in the festival and were selected.”

Further, imprints of ‘स्वरगंधार’ can be clearly seen on the dhols used in the video.
