Mumbai Floods Image Falsely Claimed to Be from Karnataka
The image in circulation is claimed to be from SDM Hospital in Karnataka.
An unprecedented amount of rainfall has wreaked havoc in Karnataka. Since 1 August, nearly 48 people have lost their lives and thousands have been evacuated. In the backdrop of the floods in the state, a picture is being circulated on the Internet which suggests it is from SDM Hospital in Dharwad. Some social media users are sharing it with the claim that it is from ‘Hubli Dharwad.’ Hubli-Dharwad are twin cities in Karnataka.
The Quint received a query about the claim made by the image via its Whatsapp helpline number.
TRUE OR FALSE?
While the picture has not been tampered with, it is not from SDM Hospital in Karnataka’s Dharwad. Rather, it is from Mumbai’s Dombivli area.
WHAT WE FOUND OUT
The PRO of SDM Hospital told The Quint that the image is not from their hospital and suggested that it might be from Mumbai. Earlier, the hospital had also issued a clarification on their Facebook page that the image being circulated is being shared with a false narrative.
On looking at the photo carefully, we could identify the apartment’s name as ‘River Scape.’ Then, we searched on Google using the key words ‘River Scape Mumbai’ and found that the building is located in Palava City in Mumbai’s Dombivli area.
Further, we found a bulletin aired by ABP Majha on heavy water-logging in Dombivli’s Palava city. On comparing the buildings seen in the video and the ones in the image being shared on social media, we found that they were identical.
The Indian Express had also shared images of how vehicles of Palava city, which was planned by Lodha, were submerged because of heavy rains. A supportive Storm Water Pumping Station team of the housing society, along with the residents, they were able to lower the water levels, said a Lodha spokesperson, DNA reported.
