A grainy video is being shared on social media platforms with a claim that it shows lawyers recently protesting and blocking the streets against the Waqf (Amendment) Bill.

What did users say?: An X (formerly Twitter) user shared the clip with a caption in Hindi that loosely translated to, "Lawyers are protesting in large numbers by blocking the roads against the Waqf Board Bill. Lawyers' slogan, Dictatorship will not run on the strength of MPs, take back your black law."

An archive of the post can be found here.

The above post had recorded over 75 thousand views on the platform. More archives of similar claims can be found here, here, and here.

What are the facts?: The claim is false. The video dates back to February of this year and shows lawyers protesting against the Advocate (Amendment) Bill near Tis Hazari court.

What led us to the truth?: On going through the viral clip, we found one of the people could be heard identifying the location as Tis Hazari court.

  • We reached out to lawyers, who shared the source of the clip with us and said that they had too participated in the protest.

  • The video was posted on 22 February with a title that said, "Lakhs of lawyers blocked the roads of Delhi? Modi government was shocked to see this! Watch it quickly."

  • It was published on a verified YouTube channel named 'HNP NEWS HINDI'.

  • Team WebQoof went through the video and found that several lawyers could be seen carrying posters that said "Take back The Advocate (Amendment Bill) 2025".

  • This made it further clear that the protest was unrelated to Waqf (Amendment) Bill.

News reports: A report published by The Hindu mentioned that lawyers practising in district courts in Delhi had abstained from their work against the recent draft of Advocates (Amendment) Bill.

The report was published on 18 February

Conclusion: Evidently, the video is being shared with a false claim.
