Indian Navy’s MiG-29K That Crashed in Goa? No, Photo is From Peru
While the news is true about the aircraft crash in Dabolim, the photo is of a completely different incident.
CLAIM
News agency IANS on Saturday, 16 November tweeted a photo of a plane crash claiming that it was a photo of the aircraft of Indian Navy that had crashed near Goa’s Dabolim International Airport the same day.
The caption along with the tweet read – “#भारतीयनौसेना का एक विमान #डाबोलिम अंतर्राष्ट्रीय हवाईअड्डा के निकट दुर्घटनाग्रस्त हो गया। एक अधिकारी ने बताया कि हालांकि विमान में सवार दो पायलट सुरक्षित बाहर निकल आए। Photo: IANS”
Translation – “An aircraft of Indian Navy crashed near Dabolim International Airport. An officer said that two pilots came out alive safely. Photo: IANS”
The tweet was later deleted but an archived version can be seen here.
TRUE OR FALSE?
While the news is absolutely true the picture used in the tweet by IANS is of a plane that crashed in Peru in August, 2015.
WHAT WE FOUND
On conducting a reverse search of the image of the plane, we found that the photo was actually from August 2015, when a plane crashed in Peru. Peruvian newspaper Diario Uno reported the incident and said that the three people in the aircraft were killed in the crash.
According to the report, the plane crashed in the Señor del Ampa sector, in Las Lomas, in the José Carlos Mariátegui area.
Another news portal called Peru.com also reported on the same incident and carried photos of the crash.
Therefore, IANS clearly tweeted an old photo and claimed that it was of the crash that happened on Saturday. They later deleted the tweet and put out a fresh one with a another photo.
WHAT HAD HAPPENED?
On 16 November, an Indian Navy MiG-29K trainer aircraft had indeed suffered an engine fire and crashed during a training mission in Goa. The aircraft had taken off from INS Hansa at Dabolim airport earlier in the day.
News agency ANI reported the incident and also put out some photos.
