A set of two images is going viral on social media platforms to claim that it shows a 10-year-old Dalit boy, who was assaulted in Chhattisgarh for entering a church.

What did the viral post say?: The images were uploaded with a caption in Telugu which loosely translated to, "Atrocity in Chhattisgarh...You are a Dalit, you are not allowed to enter the church.. 10-year-old boy crushed by pastor... The boy's condition is critical."

An archive of the post can be found here.

What are the facts?: Both these images are old and unrelated to each other.

  • The boy's photo dated back to April 2021, when a 10-year-boy was allegedly beaten by a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker in Nadia, West Bengal.

  • The image of the church actually shows 'Christa Prabhalaya Epiphany Church' in Karnataka's Bengaluru.

About the child's image: We performed a reverse image search on the viral image. On narrowing the search on the boy's photo, a Google search led us to the same visual uploaded in a report published by The Telegraph.

  • The report said that a BJP worker allegedly thrashed a 10-year-old boy after he refused to chant 'Jai Shri Ram'.

  • The incident reportedly happened when the child was passing by a tea owned by the worker in Nadia's Phulia in West Bengal.

  • The boy sustained multiple injuries and was admitted to the Ranaghat Subdivisional Hospital.

  • The report further mentioned that angry local residents beat up the accused named Mahadeb Pramanik.

The report was published on 20 April 2021.

Details about the church's image: Another round of reverse image search directed us to a similar visual published on a website of a church named Christa Prabhalaya Epiphany Church.

  • As per the website, the church is located in Karnataka's Bengaluru.

The church is located in Bengaluru.

  • On comparing the viral image to the visual available on the church's website, we found that both of them were taken at the same location.

A comparison clearly highlights the similarities.

  • In fact, when we searched for the church on Google Maps, we found that the viral image was available on it. The image was uploaded on March 2021.

  • This clearly indicated that both the images used in the viral claim were from 2021 and are from different locations.

The image was shared on March 2021.

Conclusion: It is evident that the images are old and unrelated to each other.
