Video From Hong Kong Falsely Viral as Clip of Air India Plane Crash in Ahmedabad

The video was shot in a plane taking off from the Hong Kong International Airport and not Ahmedabad, as claimed.

A video from Hong Kong has gone viral with the false claim that it shows a video recorded inside the Air India plane which crashed in Ahmedabad.

A video recorded from the inside of an airplane, showing the plane's turbine as it takes off, has gone viral on social media platforms.

The claim: Those sharing this clip have claimed that it shows visuals of the Air India plane crash which happened on 12 June in Ahmedabad.

Is it true?: No. While we could not establish when the video was recorded, we found that it was shot at Hong Kong International Airport.

How do we know?: We carried out a reverse image search on some frames of the video using Google Lens.

  • During this search, Google lens search identified the location as Hong Kong International Airport.

  • Additionally, it showed us an image on stock image website Alamy, which also noted that it was one of Hong Kong's International Airport.

Alamy noted that the video shows the Hong Kong International Airport.

On comparing this photo to a frame from the viral video, we noticed that they showed similar structures.

The design of the terminal and the water body beyond it match in both visuals.

  • We also came across YouTube videos from verified channels which showed planes departing from Hong Kong International Airport.

  • Cross-checking these visuals with the viral claim showed more similarities between the claim and Hong Kong International Airport.

Both visuals show a similar building and hills.

A similar comparison with visuals on Google Maps and the viral video confirmed that the video shows visuals shot at Hong Kong International Airport and not Ahmedabad.

Conclusion: While we could not independently verify the date or context of the video, we can confirm that the video has no connection to the Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad.
