The official page of the political party Rashtriya Janata Dal on Thursday, 21 March, tweeted four pictures of polluted riverbanks saying “दागदार मोदी को अधिक चुनाव प्रचार की ज़रूरत नहीं पड़ती है, गोदी मीडिया का मुँह काले धन से भर दो, चुनाव प्रचार हो जाता है! एक ज्यादा ही तेज चैनल कह रहा है कि मोदी के आने से घाट चकाचक हो गए हैं! आप भी देख लीजिए! (stained (image of) Modi does not need a lot of election publicity, bribe a few media channels and election publicity is done. One channel is saying that the riverbanks have become clean ever since Modi came to power. See it for yourself!)”
The tweet carried four pictures of polluted 'ghaats' (riverbanks), and had over 400 retweets at the time of writing this copy.
Tejashwi Yadav, the leader of Opposition in Bihar, had also retweeted the post criticising the media for not speaking up. His post had been retweeted over 1,500 times.
FACT
The RJD's tweet received huge flak with people accusing it of posting old pictures. Users claimed the images shared were taken in 2015.
When The Quint checked the credibility of the images, it was revealed that two of the pictures in the tweet were taken in the year 2015, while one dated back to 2013, and is from Karachi, Pakistan.
According to a post on Shutterstock, one image from Karachi was posted on 28 July 2013.
Another image was titled ‘People washing laundry on dirty shore of Ganges’ on 20 February 2015 and was said to be from Varanasi.
One of the images was featured in a 2015 article by ‘Foundation for non-violent alternatives,’ and was titled ‘Ganga reduced to sludge in Varanasi.’
The Quint could not ascertain the veracity of the fourth image and the article will be updated as and when it does.
