CLAIM

An article claims that ‘a newly opened restaurant within the city limits is boasting the nation’s first licence to serve human flesh on the menu’.

The article was on Empire News published on March 2016, and states that the restaurant SKIN has “received a licence after petitioning the state and federal governments over laws against cannibalism”.

It further quotes the owner of the restaurant Mario Dorcy who says that the government has conceded to their demand of selling human meat.

TRUE OR FALSE?

It’s a satire.

The claim is not a factual depiction of real-life events. The article has been originated by a website that describes its output as “entertainment purposes only”.

Further, on conducting a simple Google reverse image search we found out that the image used in the article is a stock image published by Wavebreak Media Ltd.

The website ‘Empire News’ has been listed among one of the fake news websites by American news organisation, CBS News.

The article was officially published by the website on 15 March 2016 and was recently republished by several other websites such as Desert Herald, Elite News Press and The Gazelle News.

However, these websites did not carry any disclaimer that the report was a work of satire, which may have led the readers to believe that they are reading a genuine news report.
