Edited Video Shared to Falsely Claim That PM Modi, Others Met Premanand Maharaj

Following cricketer Virat Kohli and actor Anushka Sharma's meeting with Hindu Guru Premanand Maharaj, a video showing Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and other prominent leaders watching the guru on a television screen.

Those sharing have claimed that PM Modi met Premanand Maharaj.

Is the claim true?: No, the video is edited.

  • The original video shows the review session conducted by PM Modi regarding the Balasore train disaster in Odisha in June 2023.

What we found: We divided the video into multiple keyframes and ran a Google reverse image on some of them.

  • We came across a story by Team WebQoof from 3 July 2023 which fact-checked a similar video. We debunked a video showing the same visual of PM Modi along with other watching storyteller Aniruddhacharya on a TV screen.

  • We found that the original video on the PMO's official YouTube channel, showing PM Modi and the others dates 3 June 2023. The leaders collected to review the situation in relation to Balasore train accident.

  • We compared the frames of both the videos and found similarities.

  • Towards the end of the video, we spotted Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Chief Mohan Bhagwat speaking to the guru on the screen. The two can be seen facing each other.

We ran a relevant keyword search on YouTube can found a video on Bhajan Marg's channel showing the meeting between Bhagwat and the guru.

The viral video has combined two separate visuals and clubbed them to make the false claim.

Conclusion: An edited video showing PM Modi and others watching the Hindu guru on a screen has gone viral on social media.
