Fake News! Photo of Activist Wrongly Used as a ‘Rohingya Criminal’
Don’t be a WebQoof! The photo is actually from a protest march in 2014.
Sudarshan TV, a Hindi television news channel, recently used a photo of a disabled man being dragged by a Bangladesh police officer, alleging that the man was a Rohingya criminal being dragged by cops.
Suresh Chavhanke, the Editor-in-Chief of the news channel, tweeted the link to the story, and his tweet was eventually retweeted over a hundred times.
However, the photo is actually that of an activist, and member of Gonojagoron Mancha, clicked during a protest in 2014, reported SMHoaxsalyer.
The Mancha activists had reportedly gathered to hold a rally, protesting an attack on the Mancha supporters by some pro-Awami League people in 2014.
According to SMHoax, Sudarshan TV said that to accommodate Rohingya refugees in India, the country has to fight a “war of justice, war and power”.
It said that people like Shashi Throor and Manishankar Iyer, who are “supporting” Rohingya Muslims as refugees in India, should see how Bangladesh is “suffering” by accepting them into the country.
About 40,000 Rohingyas have settled in India, and 16,000 of them have received refugee documentation, the United Nations estimated. Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju had said on 5 September that the Rohingyas were illegal immigrants and stood to be deported.
