CLAIM

A viral video is doing rounds on the social media with the claim, “अमेठी के लोग राहुल गाँधी से मिलने दिल्ली पहुँचे,अमेठी में चुनाव हारने के बाद राहुल से मिलते ही लोग अपने आँखों के आंसू नहीं रोक पाये.

(Translation: People of Amethi reached Delhi to meet Rahul Gandhi, after losing the election in Amethi, people could not stop their tears when they met Rahul.”)

In the video, Congress President Rahul Gandhi can be seen consoling an old woman in the middle of a crowd.

The video along with the claim was viral on Facebook.

TRUE OR FALSE?

Though the video is authentic, the claims in the message are false. The video is from November 2017, when Rahul Gandhi met the kin of the victims of the NTPC explosion.

WHAT WE FOUND OUT

A reverse image search on Google led us to several Facebook pages that had posted the video two years ago, with the caption, “श्रमिकों की मांग है कि लापरवाही की वजह से हुई इस दुर्घटना की न्यायिक जांच होनी चाहिए और दोषियों को कड़ी सजा मिलनी चाहिए।”

(Translation: Workers demand that there should be a judicial investigation of the accident due to negligence and the culprits should be given a severe punishment.)

A Google search of the same led us to Gandhi’s tweet on the NTPC explosion that took place on 1 November 2017.

Another reverse image search of a screenshot of the video along with the keyword “NTPC” led us to Congress’s tweet on their official twitter handle, @INCIndia, stating that Gandhi met the “affected and their families” at the NTPC headquarters, along with the original video.

The Quint had also covered Rahul Gandhi’s visit to Raebareli to take account of the situation. Twenty-six people were killed and around 66 were injured as a boiler tube exploded in the NTPC’s Unchahar plant in Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh. The 500MW tube placed in the under-trail unit of the NTPC reportedly exploded due to a pressure build-up.

The NTPC had initiated a probe to ascertain the cause of the blast, while Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had announced Rs 2 lakh compensation for the families of those killed and Rs 50,000 for the grievously injured.
