No, PM Modi Didn’t Meet Manmohan Singh Ahead of His Govt’s Budget
The video is actually from 2014 after Narendra Modi was sworn-in as the prime minister succeeding Manmohan Singh.
CLAIM
A video is being circulated on Facebook with a claim that Prime Minister Narendra Modi met former prime minister Manmohan Singh ahead of his government’s budget on 5 July.
The text accompanying the video reads, “PM Modi meeting Manmohan Singh hints at the economy’s poor condition. (पीएम मोदी का डॉ मनमोहन सिंह से मिलने जाना इस बात का पर्याप्त संकेत देता है कि अर्थ व्यवस्था पूरी तरह चौपट हो चुकी है। बिना मतलब ये आदमी अपनी माँ के पास भी नहीं जाता।)“
At the time of writing the story, the video had garnered over 2,400 views.
The Quint received a query about the same on its WhatsApp helpline number.
TRUE OR FALSE?
The video is real. However the narrative with which it is being shared is completely false. The video is actually from 2014 when Narendra Modi won the Lok Sabha elections. He met his predecessor Manmohan Singh to make a courtesy call.
WHAT WE FOUND OUT
Using the Google Chrome extension Invid, The Quint found out that the video is actually from 2014 when Prime Minister Narendra Modi had visted former prime minister Manmohan Singh.
As seen in the video, Modi was received by Singh and his wife Gursharan Kaur who had shifted to their new residence vacating 7, Race Course Road (now Lok Kalyan Marg), his official residence for 10 years.
The news was covered by various media organisations.
A plausible reason behind the video going viral before the budget could be the fact that Manmohan Singh has served as the Finance Minister in the cabinet of PV Narasimha Rao from 1991 to 1996. He is a well known economist and has been the Governor of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) from 1982 to 1985.
Modi government has faced criticism for slow growth of the Indian economy, after it slumped to a five-year low of 6.8 percent in 2018-19.
