A viral video on social media claims that the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Shiv Sena are not allowing Muslims to vote.

TRUE OR FALSE?

The claims made about the viral video are false. The video is from Viramgam town in Ahmedabad district, Gujarat where a clash between two communities had taken place in April.

WHAT WE FOUND OUT?

We did a frame-to-frame analysis using InVID, a video verification tool and then reverse searched each frame on reverse search image engine Yandex. This analysis led us to a tweet that was shared by ‘Cloudy Swaraj’ on 3 April.

The tweet had earlier shared the same video that is viral now and claimed that it was from Viramgam, Ahmedabad.

Fake news busting site Alt News carried out a Google search with Gujarati keywords. Through this search, they came across a news article that was published by a Gujarati media house Akila News on 1 April. The article was headlined as, ‘વિરમગામમાં કબ્રસ્‍તાનની દિવાલ બાબતે ઠાકોર-મુસ્‍લિમ વચ્‍ચે જૂથ અથડામણ’’

The news article carried several photographs of the reported incident. The photographs that are labelled in the below image were same as the individual frames in the video that is viral on social media platforms.

WHY DID THE CLASH HAPPEN?

According to an Indian Express report, at least six people were left injured and 15 detained after a clash broke out between two communities in Viramgam, Ahmedabad on 31 March. The incident took place in Viramgam’s Bhathipura area after a woman tried to hang washed clothes on a burial ground’s wall. Consequently, few people objected her action. The police had filed two FIRs, The Indian Express report added.

“Six-seven persons were injured in the clash. An FIR was registered in the incident and when police personnel went to the spot to identify and arrest the accused, stones were pelted at police. Following this, another FIR was registered against the persons who pelted stones at police,” a police officer told The Indian Express.
