CLAIM

'Chowkidar' Kalyan Chaubey, the Bharatiya Janata Party's candidate from West Bengal's Krishnanagar parliamentary constituency, shared a video of BJP workers, including the party's state secretary Shyamapada Mondal, being thrashed allegedly by Trinamool Congress workers.

The tweet, shared on 9 April, read:

TRUE OR FALSE?

The claim, while allegedly true – the TMC denies it – is dated and is hence misleading. The video is over a year old, and the incident occurred in the state's Bankura district in the run-up to the panchayat polls.

According to a NewsX report, the attack took place when the party cadre, along with Mondal, were on their way to attend a meeting with the District Magistrate to file a complaint over the violence by TMC workers, which was stopping them from filing nominations.

While the BJP alleged that the TMC was beind the attack, the latter refuted these allegations.

The district of Bankura was marred by incidents of violence in the run-up to the panchayat polls last year. Days before this incident, a BJP nominee for the polls was killed outside the office of the block development officer in the district's Ranibandh. While the BJP blamed the TMC for the death of their nominee, the latter once again denied these allegations.
