Former President Pranab Mukherjee’s address at an Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh event in Nagpur was controversial well before it began on 7 June. But the outrage, both on the internet and off it, has only intensified after the speech.

To their credit, the RSS was pleased as punch after the former President called its founder, KB Hedgewar, a “great son of Mother India.”

However, they seemed to have missed out on more than a few other nuanced points, which several prominent figures were quick to pick up.

‘Pranab Mukherjee Trolled RSS in Their Own Headquarters’

From politicians to journalists to the common man, more than a few people said Mukherjee pulled a fast one on the Sangh, and in their own backyard no less.

‘Pranab Should Have Reminded RSS of One Nathuram Godse’

However, probably the biggest target that Pranab Mukherjee threw up in the air was his silence on the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi by Nathuram Godse — a staunch proponent of the RSS and its ideology.

Big Words, But Little Substance?

Many prominent figures pointed out the holes in the RSS-Pranab event, namely, that it failed to address many real, burning issues in the country.

With the former President’s speech now done and dusted, the buzz around its implication is only growing.

However, as one astute editor said, Mukherjee’s could be interpreted by people from across the political spectrum to suit their own needs.
