Gangai Amaran, who joined the BJP in 2014, has been fielded by the party to contest the RK Nagar seat, where the by-election is being held to fill the vacancy caused by the death of late Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.

He had recently come out in the open alleging that AIADMK interim General Secretary VK Sasikala had “arm twisted” him in parting with his property in the city outskirts in 1994 during the first regime of Jayalalithaa.

The music director had also lauded AIADMK rebel leader O Panneerselvam for his defiance of Sasikala.

The RK Nagar polls is also significant because Amaran will face off against Jayalalithaa's niece Deepa Jayakumar, and the DMK's Maruthu Ganesh.
