Rajasthan Women and Child Development Minister Mamta Bhupesh on Monday, 31 December, remarked her priority is to work for her caste, sparking off a controversy.

In a video accessed by ANI, Bhupesh is heard saying:

“My first work will be for my caste, then for our community, then for the society at large and everyone else. Our intention would be to be able to work for the welfare of everyone.”

The minister hails from the Berwa community, which is a scheduled caste in Rajasthan, reported News18.

Bhupesh, who holds an MBA degree, is the lone woman minister in Ashok Gehlot’s cabinet.

She was sworn in, along with other ministers on 23 December 2018. She has been a member of the Congress party for the last 26 years.

The Congress party returned to power in Rajasthan by winning 99 seats in the the recently concluded state assembly elections.
