On Wednesday morning, Navjot Singh Sidhu and wife Navjot Kaur Sidhu formally resigned from the BJP after months of controversy around the upcoming elections in Punjab.

Sidhu has already announced his own front – Awaaz-e-Punjab – along with hockey player-turned-MLA Pargat Singh and Punjab-based Independent MLAs Simarjeet Singh Bains and Balwinder Singh Bains.

Sidhu’s wife, who has also formally resigned from the party, openly accused the Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP combine for stifling the couple in their own constituency.

I am an individual and I only picked up issues of my zone, but I wasn’t allowed. If I raise social issues, how is that anti-party? This is not a democracy, this is a dictatorship.

It was only a matter of time before the two formally announced their resignation. For months, there was tension surrounding Navjot Singh Sidhu’s political future in Punjab after he resigned as the Rajya Sabha MP.

The couple made no secret about their dissatisfaction with the BJP either. Sidhu was expected to join the Aam Aadmi Party at a high rank, but after weeks of speculation, he announced his own front.
