The Election Commission on Thursday announced the schedule for Meghalaya, Tripura and Nagaland assembly elections. The term of the Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura legislative assemblies is ending on 6 March, 13 March and 14 March, respectively. The elections will be held in Tripura on 18 February, and Meghalaya and Nagaland on 27 February.

Elections in Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland in February

The CEC announced the polling for legislative assembly elections in Tripura on 18 February, while Meghalaya and Nagaland will go to vote on 27 February. AK Jyoti announced the counting for all 3 states on 3 March 2018.

CEC Lays Out the Plans For Elections in 3 States

The Chief Election Commissioner addressed the press conference to announce elections in the three North-eastern states. The Chief Election Commissioner, Achal Kumar Jyoti laid out the plans for the election in the three states where elections are to be held for 60 seats each.

From polling booths to transporatation and security, the CEC laid out all that has been planned yet for the elections next month.

Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tripura all have 60 seats each. EVM and VVPAT will be used in all three states, first level checks have been completed.

Elections Could be Announced as Soon as February

The Election Commission will hold a press conference at 12 pm on Thursday.

The elections in the three states could reportedly be held as soon as February since the terms for the current governments of Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura will end on 6 March, 13 March and 14 March, respectively.

The Democratic Alliance, supported by the BJP, holds power in Nagaland. The Left Front rules in Tripura, while the Congress holds power in Meghalaya.

Five other state assembly elections will take place in 2018 – including Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh and Mizoram. These elections will play a huge role in setting the tone for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
