MP Bypolls: 44.8% Turnout in Kolaras, 47% in Mungaoli Till 1 PM

Voting for the Mungaoli and Kolaras Assembly seats in Madhya Pradesh began on the morning of Saturday, 24 February. The bypolls to the two Assembly constituencies are being seen as a litmus test for the state Assembly elections to be held later in the year.

The Mungaoli and Kolaras Assembly constituencies come under the Guna Lok Sabha constituency, which is held by Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia.

  • Voting for the Mungaoli and Kolaras Assembly seats began at 8 am on 24 February and is expected to conclude by 5 pm
  • The counting of votes will be held on 28 February
  • The bypolls were necessitated due to the death of Congress MLAs Mahendra Singh Kalukheda (Mungaoli) and Ram Singh Yadav (Kolaras)
  • A total of 22 candidates are in the fray in Kolaras while 13 are trying their luck in Mungaoli
  • Scindia has reportedly dubbed the contest as not between the BJP and the Congress, but between “Shivraj Singh Chouhan and me”

Voter Turnout Till 5 PM: 58.75% in Kolaras and 69.35% in Mungaoli

Kolaras Assembly constituency has recorded 58.75 percent voter turnout, while Mungaoli has recorded 69.35 percent turnout till 5 pm.

Polling Continues For Mungaoli and Kolaras Assembly Bypolls

Voter Turnout Till 1 PM: 44.84% in Kolaras and 47.01% in Mungaoli

Kolaras Assembly constituency has recorded 44.84 percent voter turnout, while Mungaoli has recorded 47.01 percent turnout till 1 pm. The Bijepur Assembly constituency recorded 38 voter turnout till 1 pm, Times of India reported.

Voter Turnout Till 10 AM: 16% in Kolaras and 17% in Mungaoli

Kolaras Assembly constituency has recorded 16 percent voter turnout, while Mungaoli has recorded 17 percent turnout till 10 am.

'Polling Going on Peacefully'

As voting continues in the Kolaras and Mungaoli Assembly constituencies, Madhya Pradesh’s deputy chief electoral officer SS Bansal told PTI that the polling is going on peacefully in the two constituencies, and no untoward incident has so far been reported.

Saleena Singh, chief electoral officer for the bypolls, told ANI:

During mock poll, 15 VVPATs in Kolaras and 17 VVPATs in Mungaoli were found to be malfunctioning, which were replaced later. Voting is currently continuing smoothly at all polling stations.

Voting Begins in Mungaoli & Koralas

Voting for the Mungaoli and Kolaras Assembly seats began on Saturday morning amid reports of EVM machines not working in certain areas.

A local from Koralas told ANI:

I have been standing in queue for the past one hour, voting has not started since the EVM is not working.

Regarding the EVM error, a poll official was quoted by PTI as saying:

An error was reported in the EVM machine in the beginning at booth number 57 of Kolaras, but it was rectified and polling began soon after.

The total number of voters in the two constituencies are 2,44,457 (Kolaras) and 1,91,009 (Mungaoli).
