Congress president Rahul Gandhi is convening the second meeting of the recently-formed Congress Working Committee in New Delhi on Saturday, 4 August. Briefing the media after the CWC meet, Congress spokesperson Ranjeep Surjewala alleged the BJP-led NDA government was instrumental in Mehul Choksi’s escape.

Congress Agrees to NRC, But Not Procedure

While the BJP has been accusing the Congress of “appeasement politics” and asking if it supports illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, a senior Congress leader from Assam told The Hindu:

The BJP has made such a narrative that finds resonance not just in Assam but in the entire Northeast.

The Congress, according to The Hindu, has so far expressed its agreement with the principle of updating NRC but disagreed with the procedure.

The development comes days after the Maratha quota agitation that rocked several parts of Maharashtra.
