2 Dead in Fire at Green Island Refugee Camp

At least two migrants died on Sunday, 29 September in a fire at a Greek island refugee camp, with the blaze triggering rioting by angry residents.

Athens News Agency, quoting police sources, reported that a woman and a child had died in the blaze at the overcrowded Moira camp on the island of Lesbos. The body of the woman was taken to the island's general hospital while the body of the child was handed over to authorities by migrants.

The fire inside the camp was extinguished by an airplane. But police later fired tear gas to control a crowd angered by the time it had taken, according to an AFP correspondent.

Trump Wants to Meet Whistleblower in Ukraine Scandal

US President Donald Trump said on Sunday, 29 September, that he wants to meet the anonymous whistleblower at the center of the scandal threatening his presidency.

Trump has been relatively quiet this weekend but in a series of evening tweets he also blasted Democratic lawmakers and the media as he railed against the impeachment inquiry launched last week.

That probe was triggered by the release of a rough transcript of a July phone call in which Trump asked the president of Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden, a potential Democratic candidate in the 2020 US election.

15 Injured After Cement Factory Boiler Bursts in Rajasthan

15 people were injured, including 11 who were critically injured, after a boiler at a Birla Cement plant in Chittorgarh district's Chanderia, burst yesterday. The District Collector said, "The critically injured have more than 70 percent burns, referred them to Ravindra Nath Tagore Medical College, Udaipur."

‘World Has Great Expectations From India’: PM in Chennai

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said the world has "great expectations" from India, and asserted that his government will lead the country to a path of 'greatness' where it will be beneficial to the entire globe.

On his first visit to Tamil Nadu after retaining power in this year's Lok Sabha polls, the Prime Minister reiterated his campaign against single-use plastic.

"During my (just concluded) US tour I saw the world has great expectations from India, which is growing... we will certainly ensure the welfare of India, and swiftly, but we will make it such a great nation that it will be useful for the world," he said.

20 Injured as Bus Skids off Road in Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra District

At least 20 people were injured as a bus carrying a marriage party skidded off the road in Himachal Pradesh's Kangra district on Monday morning, a district official said.

The accident took place near Bhawarna in Palampur sub-division. The bus driver skidded off the road and hit a tree 15 feet below road level, he said.

The exact number of injured is not yet clear but at least 20 persons have sustained injuries in the accident, he said, adding they have been admitted to various hospitals.

China to Send Its Top Trade Negotiator to US for Talks

China's top trade negotiator will lead an upcoming 13th round of talks aimed at resolving a trade war with the United States, a senior Chinese official said Sunday.

Vice Premier Liu He will travel to Washington for the negotiations, Vice Commerce Minister Wang Shouwen said. He didn't give exact dates, but said the talks would be after China's National Day holiday, which runs through 7 October.

"The two sides should find a solution through equal dialogue in accordance with the principle of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit," Wang said at a news conference with other officials, including Commerce Minister Zhong Shan.

Al-Shabaab Attacks US Base, EU Convoy in Somalia

The Al-Shabaab militant group has claimed responsibility for an attack on a US base in Somalia on Monday, 30 September, as a security officer confirmed a separate strike against a convoy of EU advisers.

The militants hit the US base at Baledogle, about 110 kilometres (70 miles) northwest of the capital Mogadishu, with explosives before gunmen opened fire on the compound.

In a statement, Al-Shabaab said: "In the early hours of Monday morning, an elite unit of soldiers... launched a daring raid on the US military base" in Baledogle.
