TN Govt Seeks Rs 5,000 Crore Central Funds for Drinking Water Schemes
The Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday, 11 June, requested the Centre for sanctioning over Rs 5,000 crore for various drinking water supply schemes in the state, including a desalination plant for Villupuram district.
The plea comes in the backdrop of the state facing an acute water shortage, especially the capital city of Chennai, with water managers resorting to various measures like supply through tankers to manage the situation.
SP Velumani, Minister for Municipal Administration, presented a memorandum to Union Minister for Jal Shakti Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, in New Delhi on Tuesday, and sought sanction for projects totalling Rs 5,398 crore.
The initiative will benefit about 16.78 lakh people, the memorandum released in Chennai by the state government said.

Roadside Blast Kills 6 Civilians in Southern Afghanistan
At least six people were killed on Tuesday, 11 June, after a roadside bomb ripped through their vehicle in southern Afghanistan.
The vehicle was travelling from Kandahar's Dand district to the provincial capital when the bomb detonated near the car, killing everyone inside, according to provincial police spokesperson Qasim Afghan.
"Four children - two girls and two boys - are among those killed in the blast. They are all members of one family," he told AFP.
Haji Abdullah, governor of Dand district, said the bomb was placed by the Taliban on a road frequently used by foreign and Afghan forces.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and the Taliban were not immediately available to comment on the incident.

"If we had not encountered anything unexpected, we would have become number one in the world by the fourth quarter," Huawei's chief strategist, Shao Yang, said at the Consumer Electronics Show in Shanghai.
"But now we have to wait a little bit longer to achieve that," he said, without referring directly to President Donald Trump or the trade war.

16 Killed, Over 3.5 Lakh Affected Due to Heavy Rains in China
Floods triggered by torrential rains have wreaked havoc in southern China, killing at least 16 people and affecting the lives of 3.60 lakh people, authorities said on Tuesday, 11 June.
The floods have toppled or damaged more than 1,300 houses and caused nearly 17,000 residents to evacuate.
In Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, week-long downpours triggered floods in six cities and 32 counties in which nine persons were killed and disrupted the lived over 3.60 lakh people, according to the regional emergency management department, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
The regional meteorological bureau issued a yellow alert on Tuesday, forecasting heavy rain to persist for the following 24 hours.

Heavy Influx of Tourists Chokes Roads in Uttrakhand
With people thronging cooler areas for respite from the heatwave, traffic jams are being witnessed on several routes in Uttrakhand.
Owing to traffic jams, the commuting time from Haridwar to the four Himalayan shrines (Char Dham) in Garhwal has doubled.
It is taking almost 18 hours to reach Badrinath from Haridwar, an official in Chamoli said.
Over 80,000 vehicles pass through Haridwar on a daily basis these days, Haridwar SSP Janmejay Khanduri said.
Additional forces had been deployed to control the traffic but tourists remain stuck in traffic jams from four to five hours, he added.
The situation is not unique to Haridwar. Rishikesh, Mussoorie, Dehradun, Rudraprayag, Gangotri, Yamunotri and Nainital are facing a similar problem.

Three people, who were returning to their homes after attending a wedding ceremony in Aligarh, were killed on Tuesday, 11 June, when their speeding car crashed into a trailer-truck on the Yamuna Expressway in Greater Noida, police said.
Gaurav (30), Pankaj (32) and Praveen (28) were returning to Ghazibad after attending a wedding in Aligarh's Tappal town when the accident occurred, they said.
"The incident was reported around 1am when the speeding hatchback rammed into a car-carrying trailer from the rear, leaving the trio dead on the spot," the Station House Officer, Knowledge Park police station, Arvind Pathak, said, adding that the accident probably occurred due to over speeding.

Afghan Man Held for Carrying Bullet at IGI
An Afghan national has been apprehended at the Delhi airport for allegedly carrying a live bullet round in his hand baggage, a senior official told PTI on Tuesday, 11 June.
A Central Industrial Security Force officer, deputed at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) to scan the baggage of commuters, detected the lone bullet on the X-ray monitor while checking the bag of Suliman Naib Amiri Monday evening in the Terminal 3 area, he said.
"A bullet of 9 mm calibre was recovered from the passenger who was supposed to take a flight to Goa after he landed here from Kabul," the official said.
The man had an Afghanistan passport and he was later booked by police under various sections of the Arms Act, he said.

The Union Cabinet is likely to take a call on a fresh bill to ban the practice of instant triple talaq in its meeting on Wednesday, sources told PTI.
Once passed by Parliament, the proposed bill will replace an ordinance issued earlier this year.
With the dissolution of the 16th Lok Sabha last month, the contentious bill had lapsed as it could not be passed by Parliament and was pending in Rajya Sabha.
If cleared by the Union Cabinet on Wednesday, the new bill could be introduced in the first session of the 17th Lok Sabha beginning 17 June.

All preparations for the Yatra have been made. The catering staff of Kumao Mandal Vikas Nigam (KMVN), the nodal agency for the Yatra, has been deputed at all the camps along the way from Bundi to Nabhidhang, Ashok Joshi, the general manager in-charge of the Yatra at the KMVN in Nainital, said.
The Nigam will provide Kumauni and south Indian meals to the pilgrims at these camps and the Uttarkhand police will take the responsibility of their security up to Gunji, beyond which the ITBP will take over. "The medical facilities will be provided by chief medical officer Pithoragarh, who will send a team of one doctor and one pharmacist to each batch," Joshi said.

Noida: In a 1st, Three Jailed for Violating 'No Helmet, No Petrol Rule'
Three men were arrested Tuesday for engaging in a scuffle with petrol pump staffers who refused to fill fuel in their motorcycle as they were not wearing helmets, officials said.
This is the first arrest made since the "No Helmet No Petrol" rule came into effect in Noida and Greater Noida on 1 June, prohibiting two-wheeler riders without helmet from getting fuel in a major bid to check road traffic violations.
"Accused Shahadat, Zishan and Zahid had reached the petrol pump in Sector 71 where they engaged in a scuffle with pump staffers and demanded petrol forcefully," a district administration official said.
"When the matter was reported, the police booked them under Section 151 in The Code Of Criminal Procedure, 1973 (Arrest to prevent the commission of cognizable offences ). Later City Magistrate Shailendra Mishra sent them to jail," the official said.

3 Dead in MP's Dhaturiya As Bus Carrying Passengers Overturns
Three people died and seven were injured when their bus overturned near Dhaturiya village of Vidisha on Tuesday night. The bus was carrying 55 people from Maharashtra, to Chitrakoot. CM Kamal Nath has announced ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh per person to next of kin of the deceased and Rs.50,000 to the injured.
