The BJP’s BS Yeddyurappa took oath as the Chief Minister of Karnataka on 17 May, hours after the Supreme Court in a rare all-night shift, refused to stay his swearing-in on a petition filed by Congress-JD(S) combine against the Karnataka governor, Vajubhai Vala’s decision to invite BJP to form the government. The election on 15 May saw the BJP fall short of the majority mark as Congress-JD(S) decided to join hands and form a post-poll alliance.

The Karnataka election verdict is expected to set the stage for elections later this year in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan ahead of the big Lok Sabha election in 2019. The Congress came to power in the state in 2013 by defeating the BJP, JD(S) and the Karnataka Jantha Paksha — a party flouted by BS Yeddyurappa.
