Reacting to the outrage expressed by the Opposition following the horrific rape and murder of an eight-year-old in Kathua, Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh asserted that the state government "took a call" as soon as it heard about the incident.

Singh alleged that the Opposition was "politicising" the incident and using it to "strengthen pro pakistan elements."

Very unfortunate that politics is being played over the rape and murder of a minor girl.

The deputy CM also said that his party only wanted "fair investigation".

We said the minor girl should get justice and culprits should be punished severely. We also said that innocent people should not be terrorised, that was there, but ultimately we wanted fair investigation to be done. And that was done.

Singh also asserted that "criminals who did it have no religion like terrorists have no religion".

Justice should be done to her. There shouldn’t be politics on that. Criminals who did it have no religion like terrorists have no religion. All communities, Hindu & Muslims have fought for that girl & only disgruntled elements are trying to give wrong message.

As the issue of brutal rape and murder of the eight-year-old is beginning to wear communal shades, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Thursday promised that there will be no obstruction of justice.
