A day after results threw up a hung assembly in Haryana, the scene of action shifted to Delhi with Haryana Chief Minister M L Khattar and his Congress rival Bhupinder Singh Hooda in the city to strategise on formation of government.

After Independent Sirsa MLA Gopal Kanda extended his support to the BJP to form government in Haryana, senior party leader Uma Bharti warned the BJP against taking his help, on Friday, 25 October.

Kanda is facing trial on the charges of abetting suicide of a flight attendant, Geetika Sharma, in 2012.

After the poll results came out on Thursday, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fell six short of the halfway mark needed to form the next government.

  • The Congress won 31 seats, Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) 10, Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and Haryana Lokhit Party (HLP) one each and seven are Independents
  • Eight out of 10 ministers lost their respective seats

BJP to Stake Claim to Form Govt in Haryana on Saturday

BJP Haryana in-charge Anil Jain said they will stake claim to form government in the state on Saturday, 26 October.

He said, “There will be a meeting of legislative party tomorrow at 11 am in Chandigarh. FM Sitharaman and General Secretary Arun Singh will be there as Observers. Leader of legislative party will be elected tomorrow. After that we'll meet Guv to stake claims to form govt in Haryana.”

2 Independent Candidates From Sirsa Taken to Delhi by BJP MP

Two of the eight Independent candidates, who registered a victory in the Haryana Assembly polls on Thursday, were taken to Delhi by a BJP MP, PTI sources said.

Independents Gopal Kanda and Ranjeet Singh were taken to Delhi by a chartered plane by Sirsa MP Sunita Duggal.

Kanda and Singh told the media before boarding the plane that they will support the party which will work for the development of Sirsa.

Meanwhile, Duggal refused to comment on rushing the two Independent candidates to the national capital, saying it was an "internal matter."

BJP Parliamentary Board Authorises Shah to Take Decisions on Govt Formation

The BJP parliamentary board authorised party Chief Amit Shah on Thursday to take all decisions regarding government formation in Haryana and Maharashtra, according to PTI.

The board, which is the apex organisational body of the BJP, met in New Delhi after the party won a majority of seats in alliance with Shiv Sena in Maharashtra and appeared set to form government in Haryana as well after emerging as the single largest party.

Party sources said there will be no change in chief ministers of any state, a decision on expected lines.

Addressing the party workers in Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "Even before Diwali, people of Haryana and Maharashtra have put their faith in BJP. I want to thank them from the core of my heart."

Modi accepted that some anti-incumbency was at play and the "3 percent increase in vote-share is praiseworthy."

The Congress, on the other hand, leads in Kalka, and Garhi Sampla Kiloi apart from the Kharkhauda seat.

The JJP leads in the Narwana constituency, while the INLD+ is leading in Uchana Kalan.

Independent Candidate Leads in Pundri, Cong Ahead in Kharkhauda

The Indian National Congress got its first lead from the Kharkhauda seat in Haryana’s Sonepat district. The IND opened the account in Haryana, as it got the first lead from the seat in Pundri.

Brisk Repolling in Five Booths in Haryana

Brisk voting took place on Wednesday at the five booths where repolling was ordered by the Election Commission, with one centre recording a voter turnout of over 90 percent.

Some "shortcomings" had been noticed during elections on Monday, 21 October, after which re-polling was ordered in these booths, state's joint chief electoral officer Dr Inder Jeet said.

The re-polling was held between 7 am and 6 pm and it remained peaceful, he said.

Giving details, he said the polling percentage recorded in booth number 71 of Uchana Kalan Assembly constituency in Jind district was 90.7 percent, 71.5 percent in 161 of Beri constituency in Jhajjar district, 71.09 percent in booth number 28 of Narnaul Assembly constituency, 84.19 percent in booth number 18 of Kosli in district Rewari and 75.98 percent in booth number 113 of Prithla in Faridabad district.

Haryana Election Result: 3-Tier Security System in Place

The counting of votes in Haryana will take place on Thursday with the BJP looking to retain power.

A counting centre has been set up in each of the 90 Assembly constituencies and there is an additional centre in Gurgaon’s Badshahpur segment, which had a larger number of polling booths, according to PTI.

The electronic voting machines (EVMs) and the VVPAT paper trail machines used in Monday’s polling are kept at 90 strongrooms set up at 59 different locations, Haryana’s Joint Chief Electoral Officer Inder Jeet said.

State police personnel and paramilitary forces are guarding the strongrooms round the clock, Jeet added.
