Congress President Rahul Gandhi, who has undergone a resurgence of sorts on Twitter, was on late Sunday night once again on his game, taking a swipe at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) social media cell before leaving the country with his mother.

The Gandhi scion, who is repeatedly targetted on social media, wrote that he will be accompanying his mother Sonia Gandhi abroad for her annual medical check-up.

"To my friends in the BJP social media troll army: don't get too worked up...I'll be back soon! (sic)," he added further.

Rahul has been frequently attacked for his "untimely" foreign tours, particularly at the time of crucial elections or results. The Congress president, this time, perhaps tried to preempt the attempts of social media trolls.

Congress sources told PTI, Sonia Gandhi will be travelling abroad for her annual medical examination. She had undergone a surgery in the US in 2011. While Rahul Gandhi will return within a week, Sonia Gandhi will stay abroad for a longer period, the sources told PTI.

They said some key decisions, including the allocation of ministerial portfolios in Karnataka after a Congress-JD(S) government led by HD Kumaraswamy was formed in the southern state last week, have been put on hold.

Some fresh appointments in the Congress are also awaited as part of the party's rejig under Rahul Gandhi.

The sources further told the news agency that Rahul Gandhi is scheduled to address a rally at Mandsaur in Madhya Pradesh on 6 June to mark the first anniversary of police firing on farmers there.
