A day after Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the increase in the prices of essential commodities, the party said, on Friday, the “dal crisis is a man-made scam of over Rs 2.5 lakh crore”.

Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said that Indians have paid 150 percent to 200 percent extra for pulses alone during 15 months of the Modi government, adding that the average price of pulses has been in the range of Rs 150 per kg.

According to Surjewala, when the “profit of Rs 85/90 per kg” is multiplied by 23 crore tonnes of annual consumption of pulses “the figure comes to Rs 2,50,000 crore for a 15-month period between April, 2015 to July, 2016.”
