Political Opportunism: Twitter on Priyanka Chaturvedi Joining Sena

Former Congress spokesperson Priyanka Chaturvedi on Friday, 19 April, joined the Shiv Sena, blaming the Rahul Gandhi-led party for reinstating party workers who misbehaved with her recently.

Soon, Twitter stood divided on the motive behind her shift to a party which has been ideologically different from the Congress.

Congress spokesperson Sanjay Jha termed the decision as “political opportunism”.

Author Saba Naqvi also questioned her choice of party and tweeted saying Shiv Sena trumps Congress when it comes to hooliganism.

Journalist Rana Ayyub called her switch-over “opportunism”.

Twitter Slams Congress Failing to Act on Goons Who ‘Misbehaved’ With Priyanka Chaturvedi

On the other hand, there were several on Twitter who slammed the Congress for failing to act on the goons who misbehaved with Priyanka Chaturvedi and called her resignation “an unfortunate development.”

National Conference’s Omar Abdullah tweeted saying, “Unfortunate to lose her because she felt her party didn’t stand up for her.”

He also referred to her as “a fearless advocate for the party and leadership.”

A number of journalists also voiced their emotions on Chaturvedi quitting Congress. Senior journalist Aditya Raj Kaul said it shows the Congress “in poor light.”

Others said that Chaturvedi has had to face “burden of patriarchy” within the party.

And some others reminisced Chaturvedi’s decade-long stint as a Congress spokesperson.

On one hand, Chaturvedi received support from Congress supporters asking her and the party to reconcile.

While on the other hand, those opposed to Congress also went beyond their loyalties to extend their support to her.
