BJP-led MCD Holds Meeting at Ramlila Maidan, AAP Scrutinised

The Delhi assembly is holding a two-day session to discuss “corruption” in the BJP-led Municipal Corporation.

In a first, the three BJP-run Municipal Corporations of Delhi (MCDs) are holding a meeting at Ramlila Maidan to discuss issues they have with the current Kejriwal-led Delhi government. The move comes as a counter to the Delhi assembly’s own meeting on Thursday about “corruption and mismanagement” in the state MCD. The Quint brings you the ground report from Ramlila Maidan, as it happens.

A heated scuffle broke out between AAP and BJP at Ramlila Maidan, after members of the BJP objected to AAP councillors from wearing party caps.

Earlier, the municipal secretaries, mayors and comissioners of three Delhi muncipal corporations were on the dias. They administer nearly 98 percent of the civic situation in the capital.

The corporations of South, North and East Delhi came together for the meeting.

Various Delhi councillors also came together in opposition of the Delhi government’s attempt to restructure the civic body’s management. They rounded up Kejriwal on what they think are unfulfilled poll promises. The AAP councillor Rakesh Kumar was also questioned during the session.

The Aam Aadmi Party has a long standing connection with Ramlila Maidan, where it first emerged from Anna Hazare’s anti-corruption protests in 2011.

Earlier, AAP had hit back at the the BJP, alleging that the MCDs were unable to complete two flyovers that have been under construction for the last seven years with its cost escalating. The AAP alleged “corruption” as the “real reason” behind the delay.

On one hand there is the Aam Aadmi party model of governance where flyovers are being constructed in 10 months with a reduced cost. And on the other, these two flyovers are being constructed since last seven years with cost escalation. There can be no reason for the delay of these flyovers other than corruption.

AAP’s attack came as a number of councillors from BJP-ruled MCDs led by three mayors on Tuesday staged a protest outside Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s residence, demanding clearance of their pending dues by the AAP government.
