South Salmara in Mankachar district of Assam is on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra. On the west, it shares borders with Bangladesh. With approximately 85% Muslim population, it’s an AIUDF stronghold.

AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal’s son Abdur Rahman Ajmal is the incumbent MLA of South Salmara. But in this elections Ajmal senior is himself contesting from this seat, perhaps an indication that the party is losing its clout over the minority community here & it’s no longer a guaranteed safe seat. The Quint caught up with Abdur Rahman Ajmal in South Salmara.
