Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav will contest the Lok Sabha elections from Azamgarh constituency in Uttar Pradesh, the party announced Sunday, as it released the list of star campaigners for the upcoming 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

The Azamgarh seat is currently held by party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav.

Senior SP leader Azam Khan has been fielded as the party’s candidate for Uttar Pradesh’s Rampur.

The party also released its list of star campaigners, which included 40 SP leaders. Mulayam Singh Yadav, however, was not featured on the list of star campaigners for the Samajwadi Party.

Akhilesh’s nomination is likely to be a relief for the Mahagathbandhan, after BSP chief Mayawati’s announcement that she would not contest the elections this time around.

Akhilesh Yadav had contested the 2009 general elections from Kannauj and had given up the seat after becoming the Chief Minister of UP in 2012.
