The BJP and its allies on Thursday, 24 October, won 26 of the 51 assembly seats at stake in the bypolls across 18 states. Meanwhile, Congress emerged victorious in 12 constituencies and Asaduddin Owaisi's AIMIM tasted its maiden electoral success in Bihar.

In bye-elections to two Lok Sabha seats, Prince Raj of the Lok Jan Shakti Party won in Samastipur (SC) in Bihar, while NCP emerged victorious in Maharashtra's Satara constituency.

On the other hand, the Samajwadi Party turned out to be a major gainer in Uttar Pradesh, wresting a seat each from the ruling BJP and the BSP, while the NDA got eight, one less than it held. Both Congress and BSP drew a blank in the state.

Udayanraje Bhosale on Brink of Defeat in Satara Lok Sabha Bypoll

Udayanraje Bhosale, a descendent of Chhatrapati Shivaji and two-time NCP MP from Satara in western Maharashtra, appears to be losing his seat in the bypoll as the counting was underway on Thursday, 24 October.

By Thursday evening, Bhosale, who resigned and joined the BJP before the Maharashtra Assembly polls (which necessitated the Lok Sabha byelection), was trailing behind NCP veteran Sriniwas Patil by 80,000 votes.

We Have Bounced Back After Similar Defeats : JD(U) on Bihar Bypoll Debacle

Taking the Bihar assembly bypolls debacle on the chin, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) on Thursday, 24 October, sought to draw succor from the past when the party had made a comeback after a similar setback.

The party, which lost four of the seats it held and managed to win one by a whisker, also asked the opposition Grand Alliance to hold its horses.

It pointed out that the victory of Hyderabad-based All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen of Asaduddin Owaisi in Kishanganj demonstrated that the RJD-Congress combine no longer enjoyed the unflinching support of the states’ Muslims.

Bihar Bypolls Deal Body Blow to NDA, Hold Glimmer of Hope for RJD

The NDA suffered a setback in Bihar Assembly bypolls, winning just one of the five Assembly seats.

The results gave the once-mighty RJD a little hope as the party secured two seats, while Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi's AIMIM gained a toehold in the state clinching Kishanganj, a Muslim-dominated constituency. BJP rebel candidate Karnjeet Singh won the Dharaunda seat.

The JD(U) could win only Nathnagar where its candidate Laxmi Kant Mandal beat Rabia Khatun of the RJD by a little more than 5,000 votes.

UP Assembly Bypolls: NDA Gets 8, SP 3; BSP, Cong Draw Blank

The SP turned out to be a major gainer in UP Assembly bypolls, wresting a seat each from the ruling BJP and the BSP, while the NDA got eight, one less than it held, as final results were declared on Thursday for the 11 seats that went to polls this week.

The SP wrested Zaidpur seat from the ruling BJP and Jalalpur seat from the BSP, while retaining Rampur.

The BJP bagged seven seats and its ally Apna Dal (S) one. The saffron party retained Balha, Gangoh, Manikpur, Ghosi, Iglas, Lucknow Cantt and Govindnagar, while Apna Dal (S) retained Pratapgarh.

SP's Victory in UP, Maha Bypolls Indicates People's Anger Towards BJP: Akhilesh

Terming the victory of Samajwadi Party candidates in Uttar Pradesh and the Maharashtra bypolls as a mandate to save democracy, party supremo Akhilesh Yadav said they are indicative of people's anger towards the "faulty policies" of the BJP."

SP has won in Rampur, Jalalpur and Zaidpur constituencies despite administrative pressures and misuse of official machinery. Party candidate Tazeen Fatma won despite BJP's one point agenda to target her and party MP Azam Khan," Yadav said.

Tamil Nadu Bypolls: AIADMK Wrests Vikravandi, Nanguneri from DMK, Cong

In a morale booster after the Lok Sabha poll drubbing months ago, the ruling AIADMK in Tamil Nadu wrested two assembly seats from arch-rival DMK and its ally Congress in keenly watched bypolls with Chief Minister K Palaniswami hailing it as a victory for 'truth'.

AIADMK won by impressive margins in Vikravandi and Nanguneri constituencies, in north and south Tamil Nadu respectively.

BJP Wins Both Dharamshala, Pachhad Seats in Himachal Bypolls

The ruling BJP retained both Dharamshala and Pachhad seats in Himachal Pradesh.

In Pachhad, Reena Kashyap of the BJP, who was polled 22,167 votes, defeated her nearest rival Gangu Ram Musafir (19,359) of the Congress by a margin of 2,808 votes.  Rebel BJP leader Dayal Pyari, who contested as an independent, finished a distant third with 11,698 votes.

Telangana Bypolls: TRS Wins Huzurnagar Assembly Seat

The ruling TRS in Telangana won the bypoll to Huzurnagar Assembly constituency by a margin of more than 43,000 votes over its nearest Congress rival N Padmavati Reddy.

The Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao-led party maintained a consistent lead over the opposition Congress during the counting of votes from the first round.

Tazeen Fatma, Azam Khan's Wife, Retains Rampur Seat for SP

Samajwadi Party retained its Rampur Assembly seat, which fell vacant after Azam Khan successfully fought the Lok Sabha polls, with his wife emerging victorious by a margin of over 7,000 votes.

Khan's wife and SP candidate Tazeen Fatma won by defeating her nearest rival BJP candidate Bharat Bhushan.

Kerala Bypoll: UDF Wins 3 Seats, Ruling LDF Wrests Two Prestigious Seats

The Congress-led UDF tasted defeat at the hands of the ruling LDF headed by the CPI-M in its strongholds of Vattiyoorkavu and Konni, while it retained two seats and won from the Marxist bastion of Aroor in the 21 October bypolls to five assembly seats in Kerala. The BJP was blanked out.

Bijoy Malakar of the BJP defeated his nearest rival Keshab Prasad Rajak of the Congress by 24,001 votes in Ratabari constituency.

Rajen Borthakur of the BJP is leading over his nearest rival Kartik Kurmi of the Congress by 49,599 votes in Rangapara constituency.

Nabanita Handique of the BJP is leading over her nearest rival Sushil Kumar Suri of the Congress by 11,269 votes in Sonari seat.

Rafiqul Islam of the AIUDF has gained a lead of 26,972 votes over his nearest rival Shamsul Hoque of the Congress in Jania constituency.

OBC leader and BJP candidate Alpesh Thakor loses Radhanpur Assembly bypoll in Gujarat by over 3,500 votes.

MP Bypoll: Congress Wins Jhabua

Congress' Kantilal Bhuria defeats BJP nominee Bhanu Bhuria in Jhabua Assembly bypoll in Madhya Pradesh by over 27,800 votes.

UDP Wins Shella Seat in Meghalaya

United Democratic Party candidate Balajied Kupar Synrem won the bypoll to Shella Assembly constituency in Meghalaya by over 6000 votes, Election Commission officials said.

UDP, which is part of the ruling alliance in the north eastern state, has retained the seat.

UP Bypoll: Apna Dal (S) Wins Pratapgarh Seat

Apna Dal (Sonelal) candidate Rajkumar Pal won the Pratapgarh assembly seat by defeating Samajwadi Party candidate Brijesh Verma by 29,714 votes.

Apna Dal (S), an ally of the ruling BJP in Uttar Pradesh, has retained the seat.

BJP Putting Pressure on DM to Reduce Lead of Cong Candidate in Gangoh Bypoll: Priyanka

Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Thursday, 24 October, accused the BJP of trying to subvert the people's verdict by putting pressure on the district magistrate to reduce the lead of her party's candidate in the Gangoh bypoll in Uttar Pradesh.

"The BJP is full of arrogance that it is trying to change the decision of the people by reducing the Congress candidate's margin at the counting centre in Gangoh. A BJP minister in Uttar Pradesh has called the DM five times to direct him to reduce the lead. This is an insult to democracy," she tweeted.

"The Uttar Pradesh Congress will fight this out strongly. The Election Commission should hold a thorough impartial inquiry into the incident," Gandhi said.

Punjab Bypolls: Cong Wins 3 Seats, Akalis 1

The ruling Congress won three Assembly seats, while the opposition Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) won one in the Punjab bypolls.

While the Congress won the Jalalabad, Phagwara and Mukerian seats, the SAD came up trumps in Dakha.

Congress's Raminder Awla defeated SAD's Raj Singh Dibipura by a margin of 16,633 votes in Jalalabad. Congress candidate and former IAS officer Balwinder Singh Dhaliwal defeated Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Rajesh Bagha by a margin of 26,116 votes in Phagwara.

Congress's Indu Bala won from Mukerian by defeating BJP's Jangi Lal Mahajan by a margin of 3,440 votes.

Kerala Bypolls: LDF Wins 2 Seats, UDF One, Counting Underway in 2 Others

The ruling CPI(M)-led LDF registered impressive wins at Vattiyoorkavu and Konni, the two strongholds of the Congress headed UDF, while the opposition front retained the Ernakulam seat in the 21 October bypolls to the five Assembly seats in Kerala.

Thiruvananthapuram Mayor Prasanth, who contested at Vattiyoorkavu constituency won with a margin of 14,465 votes against his nearest rival, Congress party's K Mohankumar, while K U Jinesh Kumar won from Konni by a margin of 9,953 votes.

The UDF candidate T J Vinod won the Ernakulam seat by a margin of 3,750 votes defeating Manu Roy (LDF-IND).

While the three results were declared by the Election Commission, two more results are expected any time soon.

Rajasthan Bypoll: Cong Candidate Wins Mandawa

Congress candidate Rita Chaudhary won the Mandawa Assembly bypoll in Rajasthan by a margin of 33,704 votes by defeating BJP's Sushila Sigra.

“I received huge support from women and youth this time and I was sure of my victory,” Chaudhary said in Jhunjhunu.

Sikkim CM Wins from Poklok Kamrang Seat, BJP Bags Two Seats

Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang aka PS Golay won the bypoll to the Poklok Kamrang Assembly seat by a margin of 8,953 votes while Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) ally BJP registered its first-ever electoral victory in the state by winning two seats.

BJP candidates Sonam TSH Venchungpa and Yong Tshering Lepcha won from Martam Rumtek and Gangtok Assembly constituencies respectively.

Venchungpa defeated his nearest rival Nuk Tshering Bhutia of the SDF by 6,150 votes.

Lepcha defeated his nearest rival Delay Namgyal Barfungpa of the Sikkim National People's Party by 1,010 votes.

Gujarat Bypolls: Cong Wins 2, BJP 1, Counting Underway in 3

The Congress won two seats while the BJP bagged one seat out of six Assembly bypolls in Gujarat, as per per the results announced by the Election Commission so far.

In the remaining three seats, the Congress was leading in two seats while the BJP was ahead in one seat.

Congress candidate Jashu Patel defeated BJP's Dhavalsinh Zala in Bayad seat of Arvalli district by a margin of over 700 votes.

Before the results were declared by local election officials, Zala accepted his defeat and left the counting centre. In Tharad seat of Banaskantha, Congress candidate Gulabsinh Rajput made a comeback after trailing in the initial hours and defeated BJP's Jivraj Patel by over 6,400 votes. In Kheralu seat of Mehsana, BJP'sAjmalji Thakor defeated Congress' Babuji Thakor by 29,000 votes.

Punjab Bypolls: SAD Wins Dakha Seat

In a blow to the Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal candidate Manpreet Singh Ayali defeated ruling party nominee Sandeep Singh Sandhu from the Dakha seat by a margin of 14,672 votes.

The Dakha seat fell vacant following the resignation of former AAP leader and noted Supreme Court lawyer H S Phoolka from the state assembly.

SP Wins Zaidpur Assembly Bypoll in UP

Samajwadi Party's Gaurav Kumar won the Zaidpur assembly bypoll seat defeating the BJP candidate Amrish by a margin of 4,165 votes.

Bihar Bypolls : RJD Wrests Simri Bakhtiarpur Seat from JD(U)

The opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) wrested the Simri Bakhtiyarpur assembly seat from the ruling JD(U) in Bihar.

RJD's Zafar Alam defeated JD(U)candidate Arun Kumar by a comprehensive margin of 15,508 votes, the official said.

The by-election to the Assembly seat was necessitated after former state minister and JD(U) MLA Dinesh Chandra Yadav was elected to the Lok Sabha from Madhepura seat.

BJD Candidate Wins Bijepur Assembly Seat in Odisha

BJD candidate Rita Sahu won Odisha’s Bijepur Assembly seat by a margin of 97,990 votes, which is the highest ever margin in the history of the state's Assembly polls.

Sahu registered her victory over her nearest rival Sanat Gartia of the BJP, an election official told PTI.

Chhattisgarh Bypoll: Congress Wins Chitrakot Assembly Seat

Congress’ Rajman Venjam won the Chitrakot Assembly seat in Chhattisgarh with a margin of 17,862 votes.

Sharad Pawar’s aide Shriniwas Patil is leading in Maharashtra’s Satara. The bypolls were necessitated in the Lok Sabha constituency after sitting MP Udayanraje Bhosale quit NCP and joined the BJP.

Chitrakot Assembly Bypolls

Both the ruling Congress and Opposition BJP in the state are eyeing victory in the Naxal-affected seat, reserved for Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates.

Counting began at 8 am at Women Polytechnic College, Dharampura, at the Bastar district headquarters of Jagdalpur, a poll official said.

“A three-layer security has been arranged at the counting centre,” he said, adding that postal ballots will be counted first.

The by-election was necessitated after Congress MLA Deepak Baij got elected to the Lok Sabha from Bastar parliamentary constituency.

Who Are the Main Contenders in Jhabua Assembly Seat?

The main contestants are senior Congress leader Kantilal Bhuria and the BJP's Bhanu Bhuria, who is making his electoral debut, three independents — Kalyan Singh Damor, Neelesh Damor and Rameshwar Singhar — are also in the fray.

In the Assembly polls held last year, GS Damor of the BJP defeated Vikrant Bhuria of the Congress. Later, in the Lok Sabha elections held earlier this year, Damor defeated Vikrant Bhuria's father Kantilal Bhuria from Ratlam seat.

Congress Looking to Consolidate Majority in Rajasthan

In Rajasthan, the bypolls will be an opportunity for the ruling Congress to consolidate its thin majority if it is able wrest the two seats from the BJP and its ally RLP.

Of the 200 assembly seats in Rajasthan, the Congress has 106 MLAs, including the six who recently defected to the party from the BSP, reports PTI.

UP Bypolls Litmus Test for CM Yogi's Government

In the politically crucial Uttar Pradesh, the polls will be a litmus test for the Yogi Adityanath-led government, which has completed 30 months in office, according to news agency PTI. The BJP currently has 302 members out of 403 in the Assembly.

It is a four-cornered contest with the BJP, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Samajwadi Party (SP) and Congress fielding candidates on all 11 Assembly seats.

Eight of these seats were earlier held by the BJP and one by its ally Apna Dal (Sonelal). The seats of Rampur and Jalalpur (Ambedkarnagar) were held by the Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party respectively. The state saw a low voter turnout of 47.05 percent in the bypolls.
