1. BMC Couldn't Build 7 Toilets a Day. Now, It Thinks It Can Do 34/Day
In the past two years, the BMC has built less than half the toilets it had planned. The target was to construct 5,300 toilets from October 2016-September 2018. But so far, only 2,253 have been built. Not only has the BMC missed the deadline but has also proposed an infeasible promise: It wants to build the remaining toilets in three months.
The proposal for the three-month extension was tabled before the civic standing committee in the third week of September. The panel, however, deferred an extension and demanded a white paper on the state of toilets constructed by the BMC.

2. Plastic Ban: Deadline Ends, Action Against Violators From Today
With the deadline for creating a buy-back mechanism for collection of plastic used by retailers and in multi-layered and tetra packaging ending on October 1, the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has instructed its officials to initiate action against plastic manufacturers and producers from Monday.
Officials said that E. Ravendiran, Member Secretary of the MPCB, held a meeting on Saturday with all MPCB officers across the state through video conferencing in order to review implementation of the ban on plastic bags and single-use plastic items, said an official.

3. Petrol Nears Rs 91 per Litre in City
Transport fuel prices continued their daily record breaking upward movement on Sunday, with petrol inching closer to the Rs 91 per litre mark in Mumbai.
In the country's financial capital, petrol costs Rs 90.84 per litre, up from Rs 90.75 on Saturday, data on the Indian Oil Corp website showed.

4. Charkop Residents Say MP Attempting to Take Over Open Space in the Guise of ‘Beautification’
BJP’s Mumbai North MP Gopal Shetty, who had embarrassed his party in July by claiming that Indian Christians had no role to play in the struggle for Independence, has now locked horns with residents of Charkop. On Saturday, he built a dome-shaped framework for a gazebo on a 3.75-acre recreation ground (RG) that falls within a mangrove buffer zone in Charkop sector-8, Kandivali West, despite a stop-work order issued a day prior.
On Sunday, he brazened it out further, by putting up a banner stating that he won’t stop construction.

5. Now, BMC Plans Dialysis Centre in Khar Building
With not enough space to set up a maternity home and dispensary, and no takers to operate a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the BMC will soon set up a dialysis centre at its five-storey building in Khar West, which has lain vacant since 2012. Even a plan to set up an IVF centre at the site has been scrapped.
Apart from a daycare dialysis centre, there are also plans to have a paediatric Out Patient Department (OPD), a diagnostic laboratory, a chemotherapy daycare centre and an ophthalmology centre in the building.

6. Traffic Police's U-Turn Leads To Vehicle Crash At Vikhroli Signal
The traffic police's turnaround on its decision to close the dangerous U-turn at the Godrej signal on the Eastern Express Highway (EEH) in Vikhroli led to an accident on the notoriously fatal stretch on Sunday morning. While neither of the two drivers suffered major injuries, their vehicles were battered.

7. BJP Sweeps Housing Federation Polls Against Shiv Sena in Mumbai District
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led panel swept the Mumbai District Co-operative Housing Federation elections on Sunday, defeating the Shiv Sena-led panel.
The BJP-led front won all 25 seats of the federation, which is the apex body of the co-operative housing societies spread across Mumbai. This election saw intense campaigning by both the panels led by the saffron allies.
