Finance Minister Piyush Goyal Says GST Generated Sufficient Revenue

Finance Minister Piyush Goyal on Sunday, 15 July, said the Goods and Services Tax, for which the government has faced criticism from all quarters, has worked well and generated sufficient revenue.

Addressing the seminar organised by Chhattisgarh Chamber of Commerce and Industries (CCCI) under aegis Chhattisgarh State Infrastructure Development Corporation (CSIDC), Goyal said, "The GST in the past one year has successfully worked and has generated ample revenue. This year there won't be a dearth of revenue if people continue to be a part of this system and pay their taxes. Just when people pay their taxes correctly, the government will be more empowered to reduce the rates even further, making the mechanism simpler."

The Madras High court, last week, clarified that there was no legal obligation for single mothers to disclose the name of their child's father while registering for his/her birth, Livelaw.in reported.

Justice MS Ramesh observed: “There are also cases where women are constrained to raise children with their own sources in view of their unwilling and unconcerned partners. It would be totally unjustifiable to insist such single or unwed mothers to compel them to declare the of the father of the child who has chosen to abandon the child.”

Mumbai Woman Gives Birth to Twins on Train

A Mumbai woman, travelling on the LTT-Visakhapatanam express on Sunday, gave birth to twins safely, thanks to a timely assistance from lady constables.

The woman experienced the labour pain while on board the train and the RPF officials of the Central railways were alerted about the situation.

Indian government has refused to share copies of responses received from Facebook over global data breach scandal involving data mining firm Cambridge Analytica, stating the information was shared by the companies “in confidence.”

“The responses received cannot be shared since the companies have shared (it) in confidence. They have requested to treat the information contained in their letter as confidential and have furnished (it) only for use of authority,” the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said in reply to an RTI query filed by news agency PTI.
