Gender Inequality Makes #NoMoreNirbhaya a Distant Dream
Three years after the Nirbhaya incident, India still has a long way to go to check gender inequality.
A recent report by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) states that India ranks 130 among 188 countries when it comes to Human Development Index (HDI).
This essentially means that India has managed to climb just one rank up in comparison with the previous report. And this is on account of life expectancy and per capita income.
This also means that while there is room for improvement in multiple areas, the one area which clearly stands out is gender inequality. Three years after the Nirbhaya incident, there is still a lot of work to be done in reducing that gap. India needs to become safer for women.
The HDI is an average measure of basic human development achievements in a country. It is a summary measure for assessing long-term progress in three basic dimensions of human development – a long and healthy life, access to knowledge and a decent standard of living.
Norway topped the list followed by Australia and Switzerland.
