A woman died of starvation in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh. The incident occurred after her husband was refused ration by the shop owner, who allegedly demanded the woman to be present for her biometric data.

The woman was unwell from the past five days. District Magistrate Raghavendra Vikram Singh has sought a report from the Sub-Divisional Magistrate in the case, Dainik Bhaskar reported.

According to the report, Ishaq Ahmed, a resident of Bhole Nagar, Bareilly, lived in a hut with his 50-year-old wife Sakina, and used to fall sick often. Due to this, their financial situation worsened, so much so that they couldn’t afford to buy food.

The leftover food was used to feed an ill Ahmed. Going without any food, Sakina fell ill and died on Tuesday, 14 November.

Shopkeeper Refused Ration

The Dainik Bhaskar report quotes Ahmed as saying that even last month the shopkeeper responsible for the distribution of ration refused to give any food to Ahmed without his wife being present for biometric identification.

He only gave them ration when Sakina herself made it to the shop. This month, when she couldn’t do so due to her ill health, he outrightly refused ration, which ultimately led to Sakina’s death.
