Two bike-borne miscreants threw acid on a 24-year-old woman at the Mohan Nagar trisection in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad district, on Tuesday, 20 March.

The woman who was on her way to work in the Shashtri Nagar Colony branch of the Punjab National Bank (PNB), when the attack happened, alleged that a former colleague named Anju was behind the attack.

An FIR under Section 326A (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by use of acid) of the IPC was registered against unknown persons at Sahibabad police station, The Indian Express reported. Based on the acid attack survivor’s statement, Anju was named as an accused in the case, police said.

Besides the woman who suffered 20 percent burn injuries, four others, who were travelling in the same rickshaw with her also suffered minor burns.

“The 24-year-old is undergoing treatment at Narinder Mohan Hospital and Heart Centre in Mohan Nagar, while the others were discharged after getting first aid at a nearby hospital,” The Hindu quoted Rakesh Kumar Singh, Station House Officer, Sahibabad police station as saying.

The acid attack survivor and Anju used to work together at a private firm in Noida, The Indian Express report said, stating that they were on very good terms. But the accused allegedly got increasingly possessive towards the woman, which is when she decided to quit her former job and join PNB as an assistant relation manager (ARM).

According to The Indian Express report, investigations revealed that both the women had earlier lodged complaints against each other. Quoting the statements of the woman’s family members, the police said that the accused allegedly tried to call up the woman from different phone numbers and even threatened to kill her if she got married.
