The Shaheen Bagh area in south Delhi, the epicentre of anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act protests in the country, was cleared by the Delhi Police on Tuesday, 24 March, amid the lockdown imposed in the national capital in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.
The security was tightened and the protest area sealed by the police, after a prohibitory order under Section 144 of the CrPC was promulgated in Delhi in light of coronavirus concerns.

Must Prioritise This Pandemic: Hegde & Ramachandran Release Statement
After the Shaheen Bagh protest site was cleared out, the Supreme Court-appointed interlocutors, Senior Advocates Sanjay Hegde and Sadhana Ramachandran released a statement urging the administration and the protesters to prioritise the pandemic.
A report by Live Law, quoted their statement, which read, “Our process of interlocution has reinforced many valuable lessons, including the need for continued dialogues at all times. We believe the Supreme Court-mandated interlocution, kept Shaheen Bagh protests peaceful even while violence erupted in other parts of Delhi…We request everyone to see the issue, not as a question of win or lose. The country has a grave pandemic threatening it and currently, that must receive priority in terms of everyone’s attention.”
Other Shaheen Bagh-Like Protests Cleared Out in Delhi
Like Shaheen Bagh, the protest site in Hauz Rani has been cleared by police as prohibitory orders under Section 144 is in place in Delhi, ANI reported.
Jamia Protest Site Cleared As Well
Police also cleared the protest site outside Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI). JMI had temporarily suspended the protest on 21 March at Gate no 7, in view of coronavirus, ANI reported.
Police also used a drone to monitor the situation.

HC Seeks Centre, Police, AAP Govt Response on Plea to Preserve CCTV Footage of Delhi Violence
The Delhi High Court on Monday, 16 March sought a response from the Centre, police and AAP government on a plea seeking directions to the police to preserve CCTV footage of the recent violence in northeast Delhi. A bench of Chief Justice D N Patel and Justice C Hari Shankar issued notice to the authorities and listed the matter for further hearing on 27 March.
The plea filed by the Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind said Delhi Police should be asked to preserve CCTV footage from 23 February to 1 March of the violence-torn areas, and should not remove debris without collecting evidence from the site. It also sought FIRs against those involved in the violence and an SIT comprising retired judges of the Supreme Court and the high court.
Aligarh: Protesters Blocked From Taking Out March at AMU Against Youth's Death
Student protesters tried to take out a candlelight march at Aligarh Muslim University to mourn the death of a youth who had died of gunshot injuries sustained in violent clashes during protests over the amended citizenship act last month, but were blocked at the main gate itself, police said.
According to PTI, sixty students including 50 unnamed persons have been booked by police at the Civil Lines police station in connection with the protests at the AMU campus on Saturday night. Ten students were named for violating Section 144 of the Indian Penal Code.
Two Top PFI Members Arrested for Role in Northeast Delhi Riots: Police
The police arrested two members of the Popular Front of India for their alleged involvement in communal riots amid anti-CAA protests in the Northeast Delhi, in which over 50 persons were killed, officials said.
The accused have been identified as PFI president Parvez and secretary Iliyas, they said, reported PTI.
BJP Unleashing 'Communal Virus': Sibal Lashes Out at Centre in RS
Accusing the ruling BJP of unleashing a "communal virus" in India that wreaked havoc, senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal on Thursday asked Union Home Minister Amit Shah why registration of FIRs was delayed against perpetrators of hate speeches, PTI reported.
He claimed that the government’s inaction amounted to "a licence to kill".
Initiating a short-duration debate in Rajya Sabha on the recent law and order situation in some parts of Delhi, Sibal alleged that while the national capital was burning, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was silent on the matter for 70 hours and the police machinery was busy destroying evidences and supporting violence or rioters.
"You can do anything to protect cows, but not human beings? Do we need to bring another Article to ensure the protection of human beings," he said, referring to provisions of the Constitution on cow protection.
Man Apprehended for Murder of IB Staffer Ankit Sharma
The Delhi Police's Special Cell on Thursday apprehended a man in connection with the killing of IB staffer Ankit Sharma during the riots last month in the national capital's northeast district, police said, according to PTI.
The accused has been identified as Salman alias Nanhe, they said.
Sharma's body was found in a drain near his home in northeast Delhi's Chand Bagh area on February 27, a day after he went missing. Earlier, police had arrested suspended Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor Tahir Hussain in the case.
Delhi High Court Issues Notice to Govt, Delhi Police, Others
Delhi High Court on Thursday issued notice to Delhi Police, Delhi Government and all other concern parties including some political leaders on a plea seeking action against the political leaders for allegedly making hate speeches and engaging in criminal activities, ANI reported.
Tushar Mehta, representing the centre, informed the court that it needs more time to file a response on alleged hate speeches. The court has adjourned the matter till 20 March but asked Centre to file a response by Monday, 16 March.
Police Addresses Media on Delhi Violence
While speaking to media, Delhi Police PRO, MS Randhawa, said: "We have received a lot of videos that will help us in the investigation."
"We are doing an analysis of all the footage. Face recognition technology is being used to identify people. Many people have come forward to record their statements. SIT and local police are conducting the probe," he added.
A total 712 FIRs have been registered and over 200 people have been arrested in this case so far, Randhawa informed.
Shah Blames Hate Speech by Opposition Leaders
Without mentioning Congress, Shah said an Opposition leader at a party rally on 24 February gave the call for "aar paar ki ladai" and asked if it wasn't hate speech.
He was apparently referring to a speech made by Congress president Sonia Gandhi.
He also attacked AIMIM Asaduddin Owaisi for his party leader Waris Pathan’s controversial remarks at a rally against the CAA.
In an apparent reference to a speech made by Umar Khalid, Shah said that on 17 February, a member of United Against Hate had exhorted people to come out in large numbers when US President Trump arrived in India and show him what the India government is doing. Shah questioned whether this was also not hate speech.

"We will spare no one irrespective of their religion, caste and political affiliation. Such action will be taken that it will be lesson for the country on what befalls those who indulge in rioting," Amit Shah said.
Shah also assured the House that CCTV footage is being analysed using face identification software, and took a dig at the Opposition, saying that the software does not discriminate on the basis of religion or clothes.
He said details of voter identity cards and driving licences were fed into the software which helped identify 1,100 people.

Amit Shah spoke about the possible role of social media in the violence, claiming that around 60 social media accounts were created on 22 February and were closed down on 26 February.
“Police will find those behind them. Social media was used to incite hate,” he said, adding that he could assure the House that the Delhi Police would hold a thorough investigation into this incident.
Attempts to Politicise Riots, Says Amit Shah
Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday, 11 March, addressed the Parliament on the issue of Delhi violence and said that there have been attempts to polititicise the riots.
“I pay my tribute to all those who lost their lives in riots in Delhi and extend my condolences to their grieving families,” he said.
“I would like to place on record that after 25 February no incident of rioting took place. There have been attempts to politicise these riots,” he added.
“Questions have been asked about what the Delhi Police was doing. Police were on the ground then, police will also probe and submit a report in coming days. I would like to praise the Delhi Police for not allowing the riots to spread to other areas,” Shah said.
Shah said that he skipped all ceremonial occasions with US President Trump and coordinated with Delhi Police to control riots in real-time.
“I was the one who asked NSA Doval to go and boost the morale of Delhi Police for their work during riot-control,” he said.

A Delhi Court has remanded Mohammad Shahnawaz to 14 days judicial custody, in connection with the murder case of a man in Gokulpuri, whose body was found in mutilated condition in Brijpuri area on 26 February, following violence in Delhi.
Plea Filed in Delhi HC Seeking Cases Against Those Who Have Made Hate Speeches
A fresh plea has been filed in the Delhi High Court seeking registration of cases against those who have made hate speeches.
The petition alleged that hate speeches were made by Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Salman Khursid, and BJP’s Anurag Thakur and Kapil Mishra. It says that the property of those making hate speeches should be attached and sold to compensate the victims of violence that rocked northeast Delhi last month, PTI reported.
The plea also seeks the setting up of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to assess the property damaged during the violence.
Delhi HC Allows Authorities to Dispose of Unidentifed Bodies
The Delhi High Court on Wednesday allowed authorities to dispose of the unidentified bodies after two weeks from the date of the publication of the names of those who died during violence in Delhi.
The HC had earlier asked the government hospitals of Delhi not to dispose of the unidentified bodies till 11 March and to conduct videography of post-mortem of bodies of those who died during violence.

'Delhi Riots a Pre-Planned Conspiracy': Manik Sarkar
Alleging that the violence in Delhi was a "pre-planned conspiracy", former Tripura chief minister Manik Sarkar started a drive to raise funds for those affected by the clashes, according to PTI.
"Hooligans were hired from outside Delhi. They ransacked and vandalised many houses and shops. It was a pre- planned conspiracy induced by communal hatred," said the veteran CPI(M) leader.
"I urge everybody to come forward to help the riot survivors," he added.
14 Organisations March Against CAA-NRC-NPR in Ludhiana
14 Organisations comprising farmers, industrial workers, student groups and religious groups took out a rally in Ludhiana against the CAA, NPR, NRC and the recent northeast Delhi riots, The Wire reported.
The protesters also passed a resoluion of their demands, which included that the CAA-NPR-NRC be immeidately repealed and those inciting violence be held accountable.
UP Govt yet to Decide on Moving SC Against Allahabad HC Order
The Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday said it was yet to decide whether to approach the Supreme Court against the Allahabad High Court's order to immediately remove the posters of those accused of vandalism during protests against the amended citizenship law.
The posters, bearing photographs, names and addresses of those accused of vandalism during protests against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act in December, had come up at major road crossings in Lucknow last Thursday.
Man Held for Abusive Language Against PM at Anti-CAA Protest
A 62-year-old man from Parbhani in Maharashtra was arrested on Monday for allegedly using abusive words against Prime Minister Narendra Modi during an anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protest, reported PTI, police officials.
A video of the accused, identified as Sheikh Gani Sheikh Rehman, purportedly using derogatory language against the PM during the sit-in protest near the Parbhani Collector's office has gone viral, a police official said.
After an FIR was lodged by local leaders of the BJP, police arrested Sheikh under various provisions of the Maharashtra Police Act including section 294 (Punishment for Obscene Act or Words in Public), he said.
One Arrested in Riot Cases in North East Delhi
Delhi Police on Monday, apprehended one person, named Lokesh Kumar Solanki, in connection to riots which took place in northeast Delhi on 5 March.
"He disclosed about his other associates. All out efforts are being made to apprehend the remaining accused person," police officials said.

Delhi Violence: Over 700 Cases Filed, Nearly 2,400 Held
The Delhi Police on Sunday, 8 March said that it has filed over 700 cases and nabbed nearly 2,400 people in connection with the recent communal violence in northeast Delhi, reported PTI.
In total, 2,387 people have been either detained or arrested in relation to the violence that broke out last month in northeast Delhi, they said.
According to police, out of the 702 cases filed, 49 have been registered under the Arms Act.
They also said 283 meetings have been held with the Aman Committees in violence-hit areas of northeast Delhi.

Mumbai: Hundreds of Women Participate in Anti-CAA March on Women's Day Eve
Hundreds of women from different organisations in Maharashtra participated in a march against the CAA, NRC and NPR at Matunga in central Mumbai on Saturday, 7 March.
On the eve of International Women's Day women from various organisations, including tribal and dalit outfits, marched from Five Gardens in Matunga to Chaityabhoomi in Dadar.
Earlier, the Mumbai police had denied permission for the march and had even circulated a message on WhatsApp warning people of strict action if they conducted or participated in the rally.
However, even as the message was widely circulated on social media, hundreds of women gathered at Five Gardens, following which the police allowed them to march.

Delhi Police Arrests Shahnawaz, Accused in Death of Dilbar Singh
A 27-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly being involved in the killing of an employee of a sweet shop in northeast Delhi during the communal violence, police said.
Dilbar Singh Negi's decapitated body was found in Brahmpuri on 26 February. He belonged to Uttarakhand and was working at a sweet shop in the area.
The Crime Branch, which is probing the murder cases registered during the riots, has arrested Shahnawaz for allegedly killing Negi and are trying to identify the other suspects.

Govt to Launch Verification Drive for Release of Compensation for Violence Victims
The Aam Aadmi Party government on Saturday will launch a two-day mega drive for release of compensation to victims of the Delhi violence, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said on Friday.
The government wants the verification exercise at the earliest so that victims get compensation as soon as possible, Sisodia told a press conference. The drive will be headed by six senior IAS officers, he said.
Sisodia said that the government has so far received around 1,700 compensation forms, PTI reported.

HC Seeks Delhi Govt, Police Response on PIL for Making Public List of Arrested
The Delhi High Court on Friday sought responses from the Delhi government and the police on a PIL by CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat seeking directions to make public the list of persons arrested in connection with the recent violence in the northeast part of the city.
A bench of Chief Justice D N Patel ad Justice C Hari Shankar issued notice to the Delhi government and the police on Karat's plea which has sought that a list of the arrested persons be put up outside the police control room and police stations in the district and updated on a case-by-case basis.
It also urged the court to call for a status report containing the names and numbers of the persons detained and arrested by the Delhi Police in relation to the violence.
SC Agrees to Hear Plea Challenging Constitutional Validity of CAA Filed by Journalist
The Supreme Court on Friday agreed to hear a plea challenging the constitutional validity of the CAA filed by a journalist.
A bench comprising Chief Justice S A Bobde and justices B R Gavai and Surya Kant issued notice to the Centre on journalist Saket Gokhale's plea and tagged them along with over 160 petitions challenging the CAA which are listed for hearing this month.
Don't Dispose of Unidentified Dead Bodies Till 11 March: Delhi HC
The Delhi High Court on Friday directed all the hospitals to videograph post-mortems of those killed during the communal violence in northeast Delhi last week.
A bench of Justices Siddharth Mridul and I S Mehta directed the authorities to preserve the DNA samples of all the bodies and not dispose of any unidentified body till Wednesday, the next date of hearing.
The directions came while hearing a habeas corpus plea by a man seeking the whereabouts of his brother-in-law who went missing during the riots over the amended citizenship law.
During the hearing, the court was informed by the police that the body of the missing person, Hamza, was recovered from a drain at Gokulpuri on Monday and his post-mortem would be conducted during the day at the RML Hospital.
All Matters Pertaining to Violence in Delhi Adjourned Till 12 March: Delhi HC
The Delhi High Court on Friday listed the pleas on violence in northeast Delhi and hate speeches by political leaders on 12 March.
A bench headed by Chief Justice D N Patel and Justice C Hari Shankar listed the PIL seeking lodging of FIRs and arrests in the communal violence in northeast Delhi over the amended citizenship law and alleged hate speeches by political figures for 12 March.
The court directed all respondents to file their replies in the main matters as well as impleadment applications.
UP Govt Puts Up Hoardings of Those Accused in CAA Violence, Asks for Compensation
The Uttar Pradesh government has put up hoardings in prominent intersections in Lucknow, with names, addresses and photos of some of those accused of violence during protests against the CAA in Lucknow in December last year.
The people named on the hoardings have been asked to pay the compensation for damage to public property in Lucknow during the violence, in which one person died.
The hoardings further state that if the accused fail to pay up soon, their property will be attached.
654 Cases Registered, 1,820 People Detained or Arrested: Police
The police said on Thursday that it has registered over 600 cases in connection with northeast Delhi violence.
Out of 654 cases registered, 47 were related to the Arms Act, it said in a statement.
In total, 1,820 people have been either detained or arrested so far in connection with the communal violence, the police said.
Delhi Cabinet Enhances Compensation for Damage to Residential Units
The Delhi Cabinet on Thursday decided to enhance compensation for damage to residential units in the violence in northeastern part of the city.
According to a government statement, each floor of a multi-storey building will be treated as a residential unit for the purpose of providing compensation.
Publish Details of Unidentified Bodies Recovered From NE Delhi: HC to Police
The Delhi High Court on Thursday directed the police to publish on its official website details of all unidentified bodies, brought to government hospital mortuaries following the violence in northeast Delhi, along with their photographs.
A bench of Justices Siddharth Mridul and IS Mehta issued the direction while hearing a habeas corpus plea by a man seeking the whereabouts of his brother-in-law who went missing during the recent violence in northeast Delhi, PTI reported.
The court also directed the police, represented by Delhi government standing counsel (Criminal) Rahul Mehra and advocate Chaitanya Gosain, to make "all out efforts" to locate and produce before it the missing person – Hamza.
Death Toll Rises to 53
The death toll due to the violence in northeast Delhi last week rose to 53 on Thursday. Forty four deaths have been reported from the GTB hospital, five from RML hospital, three from LNJP hospital and one from Jag Pravesh Chandra Hospital.
Over 98% Attendance in Class 12 Accountancy Exam in Violence-Hit Northeast Delhi: CBSE
Over 98 percent attendance was recorded in the Class 12 board exam held in the violence-affected northeast Delhi on Thursday, a CBSE official said.
The Class 12 students appeared for Accountancy exam.
"Over 98 percent attendance was recorded in Class 12 Accountancy exam in riot-hit northeast Delhi," the official at the Central Board Secondary Education (CBSE) said.
‘Situation Fast Returning to Normal’: MEA on Delhi Violence
The situation in Delhi is fast returning to normal, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Thursday, 5 March, in response to the criticism by global bodies on violence that rocked the national capital last week.
“The comments by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Delhi violence are driven by his political agenda,” the MEA said, adding that law enforcement agencies are doing their best to bring the situation under control.

'CAA Could Result in 'Disenfranchisement' of Muslims': USCIRF
Members of a Congress created federal body that monitors violation of religious freedom abroad on Wednesday, 5 March, expressed concern over India's amended citizenship law, saying it could result in the "wide-scale disenfranchisement" of Muslims in the country, according to PTI.
Members of the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) along with an invited panel of experts convened a hearing mainly focused on India's Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and the Rohingya Muslims issue in Myanmar to help develop policy recommendations for the US government in response to the issues.

Madras High Court directed Tamil Nadu DGP to take into custody all those who protest both for and against CAA on public roads without valid permission.
The Court said, mere registration of FIRs will not solve inconvenience faced by school children and others.

SC Refuses to Allow Delhi Violence Victim Intervene in Hate Speech Case of Harsh Mander
The Supreme Court on Thursday, 5 March, refused to allow a victim of the recent Delhi violence intervene in a matter in which the Centre has raised the issue of alleged hate speech by activist Harsh Mander during anti-CAA protests, according to PTI.
Senior advocate Colin Gonsalves mentioned the matter before a bench headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde and said the riot victim wanted to intervene in the Harsh Mander case, which is scheduled to be heard on Friday.
"We will not allow you to intervene," the CJI told Gonsalves.
Will Hear Pleas on CAA After Arguments in Sabarimala Related Matter Are Over: SC
The Supreme Court on Thursday, 5 March, said it will hear pleas challenging the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) after arguments in the Sabarimala matter are over, PTI reported.
A bench headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde said this after senior advocate Kapil Sibal sought urgent hearing of CAA matters and said that till date, the Centre has not filed a reply in the matter.
Attorney General KK Venugopal told the bench also comprising justices BR Gavai and Surya Kant that the Centre would be filing a reply in a few days.
DU's Department of Social Work Condemns BJP Leader Kapil Mishra's Hate Speech
Delhi University's Department of Social Work on Thursday, 5 March, issued a statement, condemning the hate speeches made by BJP leader Kapil Mishra which allegedly incited violence in northeast Delhi.
"We, more than 100 undersigned alumni from different batches of the Department of Social Work (Delhi School of Social Work-DSSW), University of Delhi, hereby come together to unequivocally condemn the hate speeches made by one of our alumnus, Kapil Mishra (2004-06) which incited the communal violence in several places of Delhi on 24th February 2020," the statement read.
"We the undersigned alumni are in abject dismay at how an ex-student of the Department is capable of such irresponsibility. Both his act and speech stands in direct contradiction to not only of values and ethics of social works but also basic humanitarian principles," it further said.

531 FIRs Filed, 1,647 People Arrested or Detained: Delhi Police
The Delhi Police has registered 531 FIRs and arrested or detained 1,647 people in connection with the communal violence in northeast Delhi, an officer said on Wednesday.
Forty-seven of the cases were registered under the Arms Act, the officer said.
According to police, the police control room (PCR) did not receive any calls of rioting in the past seven days.
The situation in the violence-affected areas was under control, the police said.
'India Being Divided, No One Benefiting From This': Rahul Gandhi
The Rahul Gandhi-led delegation visited a school in Brijpuri area of northeast Delhi and assessed the damage on Wednesday.
Speaking to the media, Gandhi said, “This school is the future of India. Hate and violence have destroyed it. This violence is of no benefit to anyone. It only harms people and Bharat Mata. Everybody has to work in together and take India forward at this time.”

Over 97 percent attendance was recorded in the Class 10 board exam held in the violence-affected northeast Delhi on Wednesday, according to officials at the Central Board of Secondary Education.
The Class 10 students appeared for Science exam.
"The Class 10 science exam was conducted successfully today by CBSE. It is encouraging to note that 97.8 percent students appeared from 95 centres in northeast parts of Delhi," a senior board official said.
UK Expresses Concern Over Potential Impact of CAA
The UK government has reiterated its concern over the potential impact of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and said it is continuing to follow the events in India closely, PTI reported.
In response to an urgent question on “Recent Violence in India” tabled by Pakistani-origin Opposition Labour Party MP Khalid Mahmood in the House of Commons on Tuesday, UK's Minister of State in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) Nigel Adams said the UK engages with India at all levels, including on human rights, and also referred to the country's "proud history" of inclusive government and religious tolerance.
"The UK government also have concerns about the potential impact of the legislation (CAA),” said Adams, the Minister for Asia who was standing in for UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, who is on a visit to Turkey.

BJP Suspends 2 Local Body Leaders for Anti-CAA Stand
The Maharashtra BJP has suspended the chairperson of a party-ruled municipal council and deputy head of another local body which recently passed resolutions against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, PTI reported.
BJP spokesperson Keshav Upadhye posted the suspension letters on his Twitter handle on Wednesday.
As per the letters, issued on Tuesday, the Parbhani-based Selu Municipal Council's chairperson Vinod Borade and Palam Municipal Council's deputy chairperson Balasaheb Rokade have been suspended by the party.
BJP state president Chandrakant Patil has stated in the letters that both the party workers showed indiscipline by voting against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), hence they have been suspended from the party.

'Shahrukh Said He Fired During Protests in a Fit of Rage': Delhi Police
Mohammed Shahrukh, who was seen flashing a gun with a policeman in front of him during violence in northeast Delhi last week, was arrested from UP’s Shamli, the police said on Tuesday.
He fired three rounds, but his pistol is yet to be recovered, they added.
“Shahrukh has been charged under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 186, and 353 of the IPC, and Arms Act. Further sections will be added during the course of investigation, if needed. We will try to get his maximum possible remand,” said Ajit Kumar Singla, Additional Commissioner of Police.
“Shahrukh said he fired during protests in a fit of rage. He has no criminal background but his father has a narcotics and fake currency case against him. Further investigation is underway,” Singla added.
HC to Hear on 6 March Plea For Release of 2 Persons From 'Illegal' Detention
The Delhi High Court will hear on Friday a plea seeking direction to the authorities to produce two persons who have been allegedly illegally detained by the police during the violence which had erupted in northeast Delhi.
The habeas corpus petition was listed on Monday before a bench of Justices Siddharth Mridul and IS Mehta. However, it will be heard on 6 March as the bench was not holding court.
A habeas corpus plea requires a person under arrest or illegal detention to be brought before a judge or a court.
Deputy CM Manish Sisodia Reviews Relief Operations in Northeast Delhi

Paramilitary Forces Conduct Flag March in Northeast Delhi
Paramilitary forces conducted flag marches and damage assessment teams scoured the violence-hit areas in northeast Delhi, where the situation remained tense but peaceful on Tuesday, PTI reported.

Will Work on Delhi Riot Cases on Priority and Submit Report Within Week: Forensic Science Laboratory
The Forensic Science Laboratory in Rohini will handle the cases related to northeast Delhi communal violence on a priority basis and submit report within a week, an official said on Monday.
FSL director Deepa Verma visited the affected areas in Bhajanpura and Dayalpur to take stock of the work being done by her multiple teams. "Our laboratory has taken up these cases on priority. I hope that the result will be submitted very soon to investigating agencies," she said.
Verma said this is the first time they are dealing with an incident of this magnitude and spread over such a huge area.
Sanjeev Gupta, in-charge, the Crime Scene Division, said multiple teams have been deployed across the violence-affected areas to collect samples.
Delhi Police Files Cases Against Rumour-Mongers in South East Delhi
The Delhi Police has registered 10 cases under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, 163 cases under section 65 of The Delhi Police Act and 3 cases under section 107/151 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, in action against rumour-mongers in South East district, ANI reported.
Crime Branch to Probe 47 Murder Cases
The Delhi Police crime branch will investigate 47 murder cases which were filed after violence rocked the northeast part of the national capital, sources said on Monday, PTI reported.
The death toll in the communal clashes over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) that erupted a week ago remained at 42 even as four bodies were fished out of drains in northeast Delhi on Sunday.
The sources said some of the cases have already been transferred to the crime branch, while the remaining cases will be shifted either on Tuesday or Wednesday. Meanwhile, the department is facing difficulties in the investigation as tracing eyewitnesses has become a daunting task for the force.
Man Held for Spreading Rumours About Violence in West Delhi
A 24-year-old man was arrested for allegedly spreading rumours about communal riots in West Delhi's Nihal Vihar area, police said on Monday, PTI reported. The accused has been identified as Abhishek Shukla, they said.
"The Cyber Crime Cell of Delhi Police arrested Shukla for spreading rumours about riots in Nihal Vihar. He has over 10,000 followers on social media, and was using that particular platform to spread rumours," a senior police officer said.
His mobile phone has been recovered and the alleged social media post has been confirmed to have been posted from his profile, they added.
Bhim Army Chief Chandraskhekhar Azad Seeks United Nations' Intervention in Delhi Violence
Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad has approached the United Nations requesting an investigation into "serious human rights violations in India," PTI reported
Azad's letter to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights comes against the backdrop of largescale violence in North East Delhi.
"As I write, 45 people are confirmed dead even as the toll is rising every hour. Men are being mob-lynched and stabbed to death and women and girls are being raped," he wrote in the letter. "Thousands have been displaced and are fleeing their hometown... the state administration's response to all this has been a failure," he said and alleged that the Delhi Police has remained a "mute spectator".
He alleged that after the Citizenship (Amendment) Act was signed into a law in December, the socio-political situation in the country has been witnessing "new heights of state-sponsored atrocities".
Situation Peaceful, Getting Back to Normal: Delhi Police Commissioner SN Shrivastava
Delhi Police Commissioner SN Shrivastava held a press conference on Monday, 2 March, assuring citizens the situation is peaceful and getting back to normal.
"We want to tell the citizens of Delhi that whenever they get unconfirmed reports of riots/disturbance, then, must verify such reports from the Central Police Control room," ANI quoted him as saying. "We have registered more than 300 cases," Shrivastava said, adding that investigation is in advanced stages.
He added that various public representatives had appreciated the police's work, and had given suggestions, which they were considering. He also emphasised the efforts of the police to collect evidence, saying that they have made an appeal for all CCTV, TV channel and social media video footage to be shared with them.
Left-Congress Joint Protest March in Kolkata Demands Resignation of Shah
Left parties and the Congress organised a protest march in Kolkata against the violence in Delhi which claimed 42 lives, and demanded the resignation of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, PTI reported.
CPI(M) politburo member and Left Front Chairman Biman Bose, state Congress President Somen Mitra and other leaders of the two parties marched down streets of central Kolkata.
"We are protesting the carnage which took place in Delhi. I heard that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee described the Delhi deaths as genocide," Bose said. Earlier during the day, the Trinamool Congress supremo described the communal conflagration in Delhi as "state- sponsored genocide".
Bad on Nitish's Part to Not Say Single Word on Delhi Violence: Prashant Kishor
Election strategist and former JD(U) national vice-president Prashant Kishor on Monday slammed Nitish Kumar, saying it was "bad" on the Bihar chief minister's part to not mention the Delhi violence in his over an hour address to party workers.
Kishor, who was expelled from the Kumar-led Janata Dal (United) in January, was referring to the chief minister's speech on Sunday at a party 'karyakarta sammelan'. "It was bad on his (Nitish Kumar) part not to say a word on the Delhi violence," Kishor tweeted.
Delhi Minister Visits Relief Camp in Riot-Hit Mustafabad
Delhi minister Gopal Rai visited a relief camp in violence-hit northeast Delhi on Monday and assured people that more such facilities would be opened, if need be.
The labour and employment minister visited the relief camp at Mustafabad which has a capacity to accommodate 1,000 people. The relief camp was set up by the Delhi government to give shelter to the families affected in the violence, which broke out in parts of Delhi last week.
There are provisions for food, water and medicines in the camp. It also has a help-desk to facilitate processing of compensation forms filled by the riot victims.
"We will set up more relief camps in other affected areas too if needed," Rai said. He said he would meet the Delhi police commissioner in the evening to discuss this issue along with the problems caused due to rumour-mongering on Sunday.
National Commission for Women Expresses Concern Over 'Miserable Condition' of Victims
The National Commission for Women on Monday expressed concern over the "miserable condition" of the people affected by the violence in northeast Delhi, saying it is "disturbing" that victims have been told to visit the concerned state government offices to fulfil formalities in such a situation.
In a letter to Chief Secretary of the national capital Vijay Kumar Dev, NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma asked the Delhi government to present its action plan for the relief and rehabilitation of people affected by the recent violence in Delhi.
Congress' Duty to Uncover 'Conspiracy' Behind Delhi Violence: Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury
The Congress on Monday said it will continue to protest in Parliament over the communal violence in Delhi as it is the party's duty to uncover the "conspiracy" behind the violence.
The opposition party's assertion came soon after the Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day. The House was earlier adjourned thrice with members from the BJP and the Congress pushing and shoving each other amid the Opposition's protests against last week's violence in Delhi, which has claimed over 40 lives.
The Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Choudhary, said "democracy was torn to shreds" and alleged that a ruling party MP assaulted one of the Congress' Dalit women MPs in the Lok Sabha.
He said the Congress will continue to protest in Parliament and it is the party's duty to uncover the "conspiracy" behind the Delhi violence.
Over 3,000 Distress Calls on Sunday Due To Panic, 1/5th From Shaheen Bagh Area
Delhi police got over 3,000 distress calls on Sunday from people panicked over riot-related rumours like violence, arson and stone pelting across the national capital, officials said, PTI reported.
Around one-fifth of these calls on the emergency 100 and 112 numbers came from Shaheen Bagh in South East Delhi and nearby areas in South Delhi.
"More than 3,000 emergency calls were received at the police control room (PCR) after rumours related to violence started doing rounds in Delhi on Sunday evening. 413 calls were from South East Delhi and 157 from South Delhi," a senior police officer said.
The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation also shut down the entry and exit gates of seven metro stations but did not give any reason. The stations were reopened later. The police said it was closely monitoring the social media accounts spreading fake news or rumours and action will be taken against them.
Kejriwal Urges People to Share Info of Those Needing Relief
Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Monday appealed to the people to provide details of the needy for a quick response from government agencies for relief work in riot-hit North East Delhi, PTI reported.
Kejriwal is also monitoring the work continuously for 24 hours. Those people whose houses have been burnt are being given immediate relief of Rs 25,000, according to the statement.
"The work is nearing completion and the victims will soon be given the declared compensation," it said. "The Delhi government has also set up relief camps across the North East Delhi. The government is providing monetary assistance along with other necessary items."
A detailed list of victims is being prepared to provide the compensation announced by the chief minister. Victims are applying through the counter set up at the North East district magistrate office as well as through NGOs.
Bengali Actor Resigns From BJP, Says Can't Be in Same Party as Anurag Thakur and Kapil Mishra
Subhadra Mukherjee, a popular Bengali actor who had joined the BJP in 2013, resigned on Saturday, citing the Delhi violence, News18 reported.
Mukherjee said, “I joined the BJP in 2013 as I was impressed with the party’s way of functioning. But in recent years, I have noticed that things are not going the right way. I felt that a sense of hatred and judging people by their religion is taking over the ideology of BJP. After giving several thoughts, I have decided to quit.”
“Look what happened in Delhi. So many people were killed and so many houses were set on fire. The riot has divided the people. No one is taking any action against party leaders like Anurag Thakur and Kapil Mishra for hate speech. What is going on? The visuals of riot have shaken me completely. I thought I should not be in a party which is selective in taking action against its own party leaders,” she added.
15 Booked for 'Instigating' Anti-CAA Protests in Aligarh
Fifteen people, including eight Aligarh Muslim University students, have been booked for allegedly instigating anti-CAA protests, police said on Monday, PTI reported. Police said that other than former AMU students' union vice-president Sajjad Rathar, those booked included students belonging to Kashmir.
A case was registered against them at the Civil Lines police station on Sunday for instigating protests at the Jiwangarh bypass here, police said. "They have been booked under various sections of the IPC for delivering inflammatory speeches," Civil Lines Circle Officer Anil Samania said.
Meanwhile, in view of upcoming festivals, notices were served on 752 people for their alleged links with last week's "disturbances" in the town.
LG Baijal Visits Delhi's Violence-Affected Areas to Take Stock of Situation
Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal on Monday visited riot-affected areas in northeast Delhi to take stock of the situation and interacted with locals, PTI reported.

The Delhi police has denied permission for a march from the Ramlila Maidan to the Parliament against the new citizenship law, officials said on Monday, as per PTI reports.
The Young India Coordination Committee, which comprises members from various students' bodies, had given a call for the march on Tuesday.
Police said the application for permission was submitted in New Delhi and Central police districts, and it was not granted.
Peace and Harmony Committee' Chair Saurabh Bhardwaj Announces Phone Number, E-mail to Report Rumours
AAP MLA Saurabh Bhardwaj, who chaired the first meeting of the Delhi Assembly's Peace and Harmony Committee, said, "we will soon issue a phone number and an e-mail ID, where people can file complaint against those spreading fake and hate messages. We will probe and send such complaints to law enforcement agencies," ANI reported.
The Delhi Assembly had earlier announced the constitution of a 9-member 'Peace and Harmony Committee,' headed by Bhardwaj, and including MLAs Atishi and Raghav Chadha among the members.
The first meeting was held today at 3 pm at Delhi Secretariat.
24 Persons Arrested for Rumour-Mongering
The Delhi Police announced that in connection with rumour-mongering on 1st March, action has been initiated and cases have been registered under relevant sections, ANI reported.
A total of 24 people, including 2 people from the Central district, 21 people from the North West district and 1 person from the Rohini district were arrested in connection with the rumour-mongering.
Rights Activists Denounce Centre, Delhi Govt Over Delay in Providing Relief to Victims
Human rights activists on Monday denounced the central and Delhi governments alleging they failed to provide any medical or legal help to violence-affected people in North East Delhi.
The activists, including Harsh Mander, Anjali Bhardwaj, Annie Raja and Harjit Singh Bhatti, also criticised India's poor healthcare system, saying "there's no hospital near the affected areas," PTI reported.
The activists demanded that public representatives visit ground zero and meet the violence-hit people which is crucial for confidence building. Shelter and adequate relief be arranged for families who have been forced to leave their houses, they said.
"Round-the-clock medical camps are needed... single-window facilitation centres for official documents destroyed in arson needed," they said.
HC Asks Police to File Report on Rehabilitation Measures for Victims
The Delhi High Court asked the police on Monday to file a status report on measures taken by it for medical treatment and rehabilitation of violence-affected people in North East Delhi, PTI reported.
A bench of Chief Justice D N Patel and Justice C Hari Shankar directed the Delhi Police to submit a report on the measures taken by them in compliance with the court's February 26 order by which certain directions were made for rehabilitation of victims.
The court listed the matter for further hearing on April 30.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, “We are sad and depressed, and condemn the incident that happened in Delhi. I think it's a planned genocide.”
“In Delhi, BJP leaders who gave provocative slogans have not been arrested, but I got three of the BJP workers arrested (on charges of raising 'desh ke gaddaron ko...’ slogans in Kolkata) last night,” she added, reported ANI.
