After the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, 9 January, passed the Constitution (124th Amendment) Bill, 2019, seeking 10 percent quota for the economically weaker section among the general category, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called it a ‘victory of social justice’. The Bill was passed with 165 ‘ayes’ and 7 ‘noes’.

In a series of tweets, PM Modi said he is delighted that the Rajya Sabha passed the 10 percent quota bill and that the “House witnessed a vibrant debate where several members expressed their insightful opinions.”

According to him, the Bill will help the ‘yuva shakti’ (youth) to contribute towards country’s transformation.

Modi further said that passing the Bill is a tribute to the makers of the constitution and freedom fighters who envisioned a strong and inclusive nation.

Although, the political parties and Opposition welcomed the step, they all termed it as BJP’s “election stunt” ahead of 2019 lok sabha polls.

In the last leg of the legislative process, the Bill will now go to the President for approval.

And once it gets his ascent, it will become a law that will give economically weaker sections in the general category 10 percent reservation in education as well as central and state government jobs.
