A farmer in Uttar Pradesh’s Sitapur was crushed to death under his tractor after he was allegedly pushed off it by recovery agents trying to take away the vehicle over unpaid debts, police said.

Circle officer, Mehmoodabad, Mohd Jawed Khan said to PTI that the farmer, Gyanchand (45), a resident of Bhauri village, had taken loan from a finance company to buy a tractor a few months back. He was unable to deposit the monthly installments and a loan of Rs 90,000 remains unpaid.

According to NDTV, Gyanchand had borrowed money from a private financier a few years ago. He had to deposit Rs 1,25,000 of the total amount to clear his loan, out of which he had already paid Rs 35,000 earlier this month and was only a few weeks late to repay the remaining amount of Rs 90,000.

Around five recovery agents showed up to take away his tractor while he was working on the fields in his village in Sitapur, about 100 km from Lucknow and the agents demanded his tractor's keys, reported NDTV.

There was an argument between the agents and the farmer which led to a scuffle. As they were taking away the tractor, one of the agents pushed the farmer in front of the tractor and he died on the spot.
MP Singh, a senior police officer, told NDTV

Police have registered a case against five persons in this regard, and efforts are on to nab them, he said.
