The Delhi High Court will hear on Friday, 17 January, an appeal challenging expelled BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar's conviction and sentencing in the Unnao rape case.

Sengar, who was sentenced to life for raping a minor girl in Unnao in 2017, had moved the court on Wednesday with his appeal.

He had been convicted under Section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code, read with Section 5 (aggravated penetrative sexual assault of a child) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO), as the court found that the girl was a minor at the time of the offence.

The trial, which started on 5 August last year after it was transferred from Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao to Delhi on the Supreme Court's directions, was carried on a day-to-day basis.

The apex court, taking cognisance of the rape survivor's letter written to then Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, had on 1 August, transferred all five cases registered in connection with the Unnao rape incident from a Lucknow court to the court in Delhi with directions to hold trial on daily basis and completing it within 45 days.
