Self-styled godman and Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh Insan was convicted of raping two women by the CBI court in Panchkula on 25 August.

Violence escalated in the state with the supporters of Ram Rahim running amok across Haryana, Punjab and the national capital New Delhi. Police has used tear gas to handle the growing mobs in Panchkula. Media vehicles were vandalised by Dera supporters, some OB vans were set ablaze. A curfew has been imposed in Patiala, Panchkula, Sirsa, Bhatinda, Ferozpur, Sirsa and Mansa.
