The Partition of Bengal was announced by Lord Curzon, the Viceroy of India, in July 1905, and carried out on 16 October 1905.

The partition was ordered despite strong national opposition. It began the transformation of Indian National Congress from a middle-class pressure group to a nation-wide mass movement.
