Chennai Cops Issued Notices by NHRC on Alleged Jallikattu Violence

The Centre had issued a notification lifting about ban on Jallikattu while accommodating animal care concerns.

National Human Rights Commission took suo motu cognisance of media reports about excessive police action on peaceful protesters in support of Jallikattu in Chennai and issued notices to Chief Secretary, DGP of Tamil Nadu and the commissioner of Chennai Police, on Monday.

Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi told the Supreme Court on Tuesday that the Centre will withdraw its 2016 Jallikattu notification, according to media reports.

The Centre, on 8 January 2016, had issued a notification about lifting ban on Jallikattu while accommodating animal care concerns.

The Tamil Nadu legislative Assembly on Monday passed a bill to amend the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960 in order to make Jallikattu a permanent sport.
