A 65-year-old Goa-based artist, Shireen Mody, and her gardener were found dead on Sunday, 6 October, the police said. Originally from Mumbai, Mody had moved to Goa around 30 years back and set up Studio Arpora, an art gallery along with her artist-cum-illustrator daughter Saffron Wiehl.

Born in 1954, Shireen Mody had reportedly done her schooling from Walsingham House School, Mumbai, and completed her graduation from Elphinstone College. She was quite active on Facebook. Her last post was on 16 February, wherein she shared an advertisement about two shops being up for rent next to her studio in Goa.

Shireen also shared her paintings on the social media platform.

Goa was always the focus for Shireen Mody’s paintings and attention was paid to tropical sunlight and shadow. The works are generally large format acrylic-on-canvas depictions of Goa’s landscape. A closer view reveals a deft use of palette-knife.

In 2016, Shireen Mody began a series of paintings of the coconut palm. Both her studio and living quarters were at Arpora.

According to the Goa police, Mody was allegedly murdered by the gardener, who later succumbed to his own injuries caused by a fall while he was trying to run away from the scene of crime.
