“My name is Suzette Jordan and I don’t want to be known any longer as the victim of Calcutta’s Park Street rape,”

- Suzette Jordan in an interview to the BBC in June 2013.

Two years later she was gone, having lost her battle to multiple organ failure.

In February 2012, this mother of two was gang-raped by five men. Her complaint was later termed by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as a bunch of lies in order to make the government look bad. Soon after that remark, Suzette, who had unflinchingly fought for justice, had to fight mobs.

During the same interview to the BBC in which she identified herself as the survivor of the rape she said -

“I am tired of hiding my real identity. I am tired of society’s rules and regulations. I am tired of being made to feel ashamed. I am tired of feeling scared because I have been raped. Enough is enough!”

Jordan had been ailing for some time. Unconfirmed reports indicate that she did not have enough resources to get the right medical treatment.

She is survived by two teenaged daughters and her mother.
