External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj spoke to the Indian ambassador in the US Navtej S Sarna after reports of the killing of a Sikh man in a suspected hate crime emerged.

Jagjeet Singh, 32, was stabbed outside a grocery store in California on Friday, alarming the Sikh community in the country.

Swaraj tweeted on Sunday night:

Her response came hours after Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh brought the incident to Swaraj's notice.

Jagjeet Singh was allegedly killed over a pack of cigarettes, when he refused to hand them over to a customer who did not abide by the mandate of providing an identity card for the purchase, reported Hindustan Times.

Jagjeet, who was from Kapurthala in Punjab, is survived by his wife and two sons.

On 4 May, a 32-year-old Indian-American doctor was shot dead under mysterious circumstances in a car in Michigan.
