Supreme Court Says No to Admissions on Basis of Patel Reservation

This comes as a setback to the BJP government, which had proposed the quota to pacify the agitating Patel community.

• The Supreme Court on Monday said the stay of the Gujarat High Court verdict quashing 10 percent reservation for the economically weaker sections will continue, but no admission would take place on the basis of the quota that was carved out in the wake of Patel agitation in the state.
  
  
• While directing the hearing of Gujarat’s appeal against the high court order, a bench of Chief Justice TS Thakur, Justice AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud said the 4 August stay order would continue along with the undertaking that no admissions would be made on the basis of 10 percent reservation.
  
  
• The Gujarat High Court, while staying its own judgment to enable the state government’s approach, had recorded an undertaking by the Gujarat government that no admissions would be made on the basis of 10 percent reservations.
  
  
• Monday’s move comes as a setback to the BJP government which had taken the step to pacify the agitating Patel community which had brought Gujarat to a halt with its demands of reservation for the Patels.
