Sudarsan Pattnaik Creates New Record: 100 Sand Chariots in Puri!
Sudarsan Pattnaik carved 100 sand chariots at the Puri beach, making a new record in the process.
Renowned sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik has set another world record and bagged a place in the Limca Book of Records by carving 100 sand chariots at the Puri beach in Odisha, for the upcoming Ratha Yatra of Lord Jagannath.
Padma Shri awardee Pattnaik, who already has 20 world records to his credit, has been making sand art related to Rath Yatra every year. He got the confirmation about the record on Wednesday.
Pattnaik, who recently won gold medals at international sand art championships held in Moscow and Bulgaria, gave details about the sand art.
He said that about 800 bags of sand were used within a 2,500 sq ft area to create 100 chariots. Pattnaik took about 20 hours spread over two days to complete the work. Twenty-five students from his institute assisted him.
After getting permission from the Limca Book of Records, they started the sand carvings from 2 July. Sand sculpture is believed to have been started during the Rath Yatra in the 16th century by Balaram Das, a poet and staunch devotee of Lord Jagannath.
Pattnaik has participated in more than 50 international sand sculpture championships across the world and won many awards for the country. He was also awarded the fourth-highest civilian award, the Padma Shri, in 2014.
